Selene shook her head, quick to comment on his apology. "I got myself into this mess. I didn't have to speak up." Would she have, knowing now that it was a noble whom she 'offended'? And what protection would the lesser people have? Just because he was a noble meant he could, quite literally, push people around?

All the adrenaline and anxiety Selene felt made many emotions bubble up within her. She was mad about how that was the case. Hyrule was a different sort of place, of course, but did that mean those who were more wealthy could treat people like dirt? And they would get away with it?

She watched Vladimir play with the little stress ball. "Did you make that?" she asked, keeping her gaze on it so he'd know what she was referencing.

He took a breath. She did but she had, at the same time, done nothing wrong. Some fuck bag held enough power to get someone put on a rope with no actual evidence. "It's enough to make you wonder if coming to this damn country was worth getting away from whatever fucked with us in Termina." He grumbled out. He knew that he had to leave. He couldn't stay in Ikana with the hidden Sheikah there.

But at the same time. He should have just died in the well. Fuck he couldn't even remember clearly why he didn- no. He couldn't let his brain go there. He and his therapist were unpacking that together in a safe spot when he was ready. Thankfully, she asked another question as he started shaking his head. The sand bag he had in his hand. "Uh. Yea. But the concept was from someone else." Thank god, a distraction.

He watched how the bag moved in his hand, then looked to her. It's actually stupidly easy to make if you're good with needle and thread."

Focusing on the stress ball was helping her to calm down and think of other things, as well. She wished she had one of her own right now. Selene propped her head up on her arm, which now leaned on the arm of the chair.

"What is inside of it?" she continued to question. "I'm not that good at sewing, but maybe I'll try to make one for myself."

Vladimir wished he had brought an extra along but it was so impractical. He absently fidgeted the ball between each hand, taking another breath with another soft breeze. So much better than being cooped inside. "Sand. Really fine sand." He squeezed it and rubbed his fingers together, the object making some noise.

"Fill a bag it won't fall through some, stitch and glue where you stitched. Then put it in a softer bag that isn't much bigger." The bag on the outside allowed the other bag to slide around, adding to the squishy feel. He wish he could explain it better but he obviously, if anything was anything to go off of, was not good with words.

Explaining it was... harder than he thought it would be. After another moment, Vlad leaned over enough to hold the bag out again. He could deal with the hems of his pants to fidget with now, or the tops of his shoes since he wasn't standing any longer.

Just hearing the instructions wasn't enough for Selene, either. She did better to be shown how to do something, and better yet, do it side by side with the instructor. But she nodded and listened just the same.

As he reached out to offer the sand bag to her, Selene blinked in surprise. "Are you sure?" It seemed to be doing him some good. Yet the temptation to gently squeeze the little toy again was inticing. She smiled and gently took it from his hands and mimicked his movements with hit, squeezing and plopping it back and forth between her palms.

A soft chuckle escaped her after a few moments of silence. "If we get out of here alive today..." she exhaled a short laugh, what a thing to joke about, "Maybe we can meet again and you can teach me how to make one."

“Death is certain,” quoted Marianne, nodding lightly, “Time is uncertain. Yet it is the nature of hearts to hold on to what they hold dear. “

She smiled.

“And if a promise will allow me to hold on to you longer, Mrs. von Brandt, then I’ll be as greedy for promises as I can be….”

Finally, she released Ursula’s hand, wiping her eyes as she did so. Inadvertently, the princess yawned. Being caressed like this always brought her memories of a warm blanket and dim light, her mother running her soft hand on her hair.

When the kiss was planted on her forehead, once again she closed her eyes, savoring the strength, the love which came from the single act. When she opened her eyes again, it was a thousand times brighter than what she had at the start.

“Yes, I have to prepare what I have to say to Lord Perseus,” she nodded. Her formal, noble tone had returned, “I shall leave the matter of Miss Merrows in your hands, Mrs. von Brandt. I believe you will do what necessarily be done. Until that moment, I will involve no interference.”

But her eyes glinted a little, “Although… perhaps you can arrange for her to meet me near Lake Hylia two or three days for now? I want a personal talk with her when you have ascertained her real identity. And I can always have another big sister~”

There was a smile on Marianne’s face as she said those last words. Truly, for someone like Marianne, family connection is something special.

“I am sorry I haven’t visited your classes as often as before, Mrs. von Brandt. But I assure you I didn’t slack on my magical training.” Her eyes shone. “I think I am getting the fundamentals of illusion spells right! I’ll show you when we study together again.”

She clapped her hand and presently the heavy oak door opened. Miss Eva and Chaska entered, and a group of dignitaries crowding in front of the door meant The Princess was booked for another meeting.

“I am glad you call us, Your Highness,” Miss Eva said after a respectful nod to Mrs von Brandt, “The delegates from Holodrum Shipping Company are getting impatient.”

The Princess exhaled, “And after that?”

“Six more appointments, Your Highness.”

A knock on the door. Once again, the servant poked his head.

“The delegations of Holodrum Shipping Company has arrived, Your Highness.”

Marianne exchanged a tired glance towards Ursula for a bit before nodding.

“Let them in. I have been expecting them.”

Ursula offered a sympathetic smile and a gentle bow of her head.

"I will do as you have asked of me, Your Highness. With that, I shall take my leave."

The strength of the gods be with you, Mari.

She offered as a silent prayer. And so, she left the room with an even greater, and far more impressive air of dignity, as if she had been restored with strength. Thus, she proceeded to the private room where Janette had taken them. As she came around the bend, she spotted Janette with a palette of water glasses, three in total.

"Oh, Lady von Brandt."
"Janette."
"How did it go?"
"Well, as always."
"Very good, madame. They had requested water, but as there was no one else around..."

Ursula grimaced, "... I pray they did not leave."

"And make you a pursuer? By the gods, that would be terrifying. No, I believe they are good citizens. You believe that yourself, right?"

"..."

Without another word, Ursula pushed the door open and searched the room swiftly with her eyes, and, to her relief, there they were, making conversation. Her previous expression dissolved in an instant, and she assumed a relaxed posture.

"Ms. Merrows, Mr. Zaharie," greeted the professor as she entered the abode, "Allow me to rehash the meeting: Her Highness, Princess Marianne de Hyrule has decided to take your case and handle it personally with Lord Perseus. With her backing, as well as mine, you will be able to rest easier knowing you will not be granted capital punishment." Her head dipped as she removed her eyeglasses, "Be that as it may, I wish to discuss the details of my surveillance over you two."

First, Ursula took a seat as Janette proceeded to hand them all water, then after taking a sip, she looked to them both, but her eyes locked onto Selene.

"Before that, I would like to ask something of you, Ms. Merrows...

Is... your mother's name Theia?"

Vlad seemed to think about meeting again, social stuff really being far from his expertise. He was already avoiding eye contact, but that idea had him looking at his shoe as he brought his leg up and crossed it over his knee, one hand toying with the edge idly. "Maybe. If you can't tell, social isn't really my thing. But maybe."

He stopped when he heard someone coming, looking over his shoulder at the door that opened up, his eyes not finding a face but going back to his shoe. He was listening to her, if the way he had cocked his head meant anything.

The water that was handed to him was just held, not one to drink anything that was just handed to him without him getting it his self. His one free hand kept toying with his shoe though, silent as possible while Ursula asked her questions.

A maybe was enough for her. She could tell he was awkward, but Selene was patient, and she had met all sorts of people during her travels. It was okay if he would take a while to meet her. Even if he never ended up doing it. She would still leave the option open.

As the door opened again, Selene ceased her fiddling with the sack. She held it tightly and kept her gaze on Ursula. She had come in with such a strong presence, but immediately loosened up. Selene felt herself ease up as well, letting her back touch the back of the chair as she tried to get comfortable. The maid had come with water, which Selene gratefully took from her and took a nice, long sip. She continued to sip as Ursula began to brief them on what happened... And her last question nearly made Selene spit out her drink.

Suddenly, a rush of sadness swept through her. Yet her face only showed confusion. Confusion, and worry. She was unsure how to answer, but given the situation... She dared not lie. Selene grasped at her glass with shaky hands. "Y-Yes?" she responded, uncertainty tainting her voice. "Her name was Theia..."

Ursula watched Selene carefully, yes, she took it all in. Expectoration of water, shock, her arching brows, her trembling hands...

Even the movement of her facial muscles that confirmed her question.

... So...

... It is true.

"I... I did not wish to pry," she said carefully, "... But... Theia--your mother was a member of the Royal Family who had rescinded her claim to the throne." She breathed in softly, prompting her to sit up as straight as her spine would allow.

"... Even so, by association of birthright, you remain a princess of Hyrule."

And she stood up, then proceeded to drop with a low, reverent bow in Selene's direction. Additionally, her handmaiden followed suite with a respectful curtsey.

"Forgive me for my ignorance. When I saw you, I saw Princess Theia, but doubt clouded my judgement."

Wh-What?

Did she... Really just hear that?

All movements from her ceased. She no longer shook like a leaf. She didn't blink. She didn't even breathe. A look of disbelief was on her face, yet she stiffened straight up at what Ursula had said. Even as the professor and the handmaiden bowed to her... She remained silent.

It remained silent for what seemed like an eternity, but finally Selene slowly blinked and carefully looked at each person in turn. When she looked at Vladimir, her eyes screamed "Help me!" even if she did not know how to be helped, or that he most definitely wouldn't be able to either.

Slowly, she began moving her glass. She pressed the rim to her lips and slowly took a sip... Then a gulp.

"How do I know this to be true?" she finally questioned. Despite taking a drink of water, her throat felt dry, and her voice almost cracked. How did this woman know about her mother...

Could it really be true?

Ursula's brow creased harder as her mind began to work swifly. The woman knew that she only recognized her by her appearance alone...

... That... that's right!

"Your Highness... you are the spitting image of your mother," she said with utter confidence, "I... I know, because I saved her portait from destruction and had returned." Her head lowered, "You must believe me. Theia was a close friend of mine, and I would never desire to cause her shame. If it is the proof you need, I will show you the portrait." Her head raised, "But I am afraid that I must continue with procedure. I shall provide necessary leniency on behalf of your mother, but I must be clear: I have an agreement with the law."

Thus, she began.

"As you have been pardoned of a death penalty, you both have instead been given a penalty of custody for two weeks. If in the event that I cannot continue custody, my right hand maid, Janette, shall be given right of custody."

The maid bowed gently.

"As for what you would owe me for the service of assisting you, I will state now that you must perform a certain action on my behalf--and you will be obligated to comply. As stated before, I will not ask you to take another person's life, or bring damage to any person...

... But when in the day that I succumb to the wiles of Demise..."

Her eyes shut briefly, then opened.

"... You would not allow my house or my dead to bear shame for my actions forthwith."

Vlad finally looked back from watching a cloud float by, his glass of water having been sat down on the ground next to him, still entirely untouched. Then came what the fuck she wanted from them both. When he was going to be able to sit down and unpack all of this on his own time, well, he was afraid of what would come out of it.

He had so much to think on, so overwhelmed by the cryptic nature of her words, he furrowed his brows. "Wait. Succumb to the wiles of Demise?" He could tell what kind of mage she was, even if she had flexed ominous shadows jokingly at him like he totally wasn't from the valley of the dead. He'd probably find it humorous if he had an easier time processing when he should and shouldn't laugh. ~~What's a laugh?"~~

"So you just want us to protect your family name when you... go nuts? Firstly, what do you expect some grave keeper to do about that? I nearly got executed for fighting back. He opened his mouth again to continue but stopped, letting out a tired huff through his nose, watching Ursula.

Ursula could have ordered them to clean the royal toilets and Selene would have agreed. After such news, it was hard to focus on anything that was being said. After Ursula said she knew her mother... was her splitting image... Selene might have thought it a lie, but for some reason she wanted to trust her gut, truly and deeply. It was a revelation that her mind was completely focused on. Whatever Ursula said was met with small nods and the greatest effort to fight back tears.

She wanted to see it. She needed to see that portrait. But Vladimir was beginning to get upset, and so she kept quiet. Her fists clenched as the nerves grew.

"When can I see it?" she burst out once there was a moment of silence. "I'll do anything, babysit the princess, keep her safe, yes. But please... I would like to see the portrait..." Her words grew softer and softer as she began to speak, until they were barely a whisper. "I need to see her again..."

Ursula squinted at Vladimir, and her fist clenched tightly, "Oh, if you were but a man of lesser academia to consider what I speak of." She waved her hand over her head dismissively, "My house is not my name, Mr. Zaharie. In fact, my house is composed of those who have pledged their life in service to my late husband, the general Johannes von Brandt." Her head slightly turned toward her maidservant, "Janette is one such member, and has been my right hand ever since Johannes fell. They..." Her head lowered, "They had brought me comfort since his death. To not bring my house to shame is to tell them that I am not myself, and that my future actions would not be my own."

She shifted her gaze to Selene, "... Your Highness, I will soon bring you to the portrait."
