Marianne listened intently as her mentor began the defense of the two miscreants. She learned early that it was better not to interrupt Mrs von Brandt when she was speaking, and she took the lesson to heart. She gave Mrs. von Brandt her full attention, no less intense than which she had given Selene and Vladimir before, although her face was decidedly softer.
And the more Mrs von Brandt talked, the more at ease Marianne’s expression became. Ideas were seemingly forming in her mind, and she nodded at certain points in her speech to show that she understood. Her eyes widened with interest when Mrs. von Brandt put the fancy squeezable ball in front of her and immediately took it, toying with it between her palms.
In the end of Mrs von Brandt exposition, the princess’ gaze shifted from Mrs. von Brandt to Selene to Vladimir and back to Mrs von Brandt again, mulling her thoughts.
The aura was decidedly lighter than before, though. When it came to weaving themselves around laws, these teacher-student duo were famously unstoppable.
“I thank you for your information on Baron Perseus’ account, Lady von Brandt,” she began, staring at her audience one by one as she spoke, “I will certainly look into it. But it will not help our case right now. An attack on character, motive, or other attribute of the person making an argument does not invalidate the argument itself. Although we certainly can use it as a personal leverage. And rest assured, I will.

“However, if Baron Perseus did as you said he had done, Lady von Brandt, then it will certainly help our case. He does seem to be have an injury. But if there is an evidence to the contrary, it will weaken his claim. Let us not forget, however, that in the very same Hyrulean Constitutional Law, the very first article third point declares the protection of any and all Hyrulean Citizen, and that 'Any direct action levied against a citizen of Hyrule with the intention to harm, in peace time, and not in the act of self-defense, by a citizen of Hyrule or otherwise, will be subject to punishments as decreed by sovereign law'. Baron Perseus can and will pursue this.”
She chewed her lips, “While self-defense is a broad term, it would be hard to pretend responding to verbal insults with wind magic as an equivalent exchange….” Her eyes became distant. ”But maybe… Maybe….”
She fell silent for a while, seemingly lost in her thoughts. Her palm absent-mindedly squeezing the ball and releasing it a few times. Beside her Miss Eva shifted closer to her.
“Miss Merrows,” she said suddenly, transferring the ball from her right hand to her left. “Lady von Brandt believes you are uninvolved in the assault. Witnesses provided to me said otherwise. And although I am inclined to trust that you are not someone who will readily cause harm to someone, we will let this rest for now. Mr. Zaharie-“ she turned towards Vlad, “you have a far harder case to argue than Miss Merrows. But if you are indeed in need of certain treatment as Lady von Brandt attested, I will use it in your defense. The sixth amendment on Hyrulean Constitutional Law article nine covers this kind of situation.”
She paused, inhaling deeply, before her sharp gaze turned towards Selene and Vladimir once more.
“I want you two to know that you can count yourselves very lucky to have Lady von Brandt on your side. I trust her more than I trust myself-“ she nodded towards Ursula, “And if she vouches for you two, so will I.
However, I need not to tell you that what we are discussing here is confidential. If any words, any single word that we ever have this meeting comes out, you will not only put Her Ladyship in jeopardy. You will also besmirch my integrity as one of the High Judges of Hyrule.”
The Princess’ back straightened. Immediately, the air in the room shifted with expectation. The princess, was about to state her decree.

“From now on, you two can consider your dealings with Baron Perseus to be done. I will be facing the Baron in your case. You will not be involved in this matter anymore, unless an unforeseen circumstance comes along.”
She raised a hand, “However, in return, from this day your dealings are with Lady von Brandt, and by extension, with me. Both of you will be placed under her custodianship; She will manage your surveillance and how often you have to report yourselves. What she requires of you is also required by law, and should Hyrule has any need of you, you will answer its call. This arrangement will be upheld until an unspecified time, of which you will be notified. That is my decision.”
Her gaze swept the two guilty parties, “Is there anything you want to say for yourselves?"
