"Now that I am a Knight of Hyrule...
It was time. They had found serious leads on the Mirror of Twilight's location. The old man had pointed the Royal Family towards several temples spread across Hyrule where the shards had been hidden in order to keep them safe from Light World outsiders long ago. But they had no choice if they were to collect them and re-assemble the Mirror of Twilight. It was the only way to access the long-lost Twilight Realm, they had been told, find answers on how this Twili had gotten here... And find a way to stop him before his army of monsters became too strong for their combined forces to defeat. They had already ravaged Hyrule City, Zora's Domain, The Hidden Village, Kakariko Village and Goron City... Triggered an eruption of the thought-inactive Death Mountain with effects still felt today. They had to be stopped. And soon. Or there wouldn't be a Hyrule left to protect. Captain Tethras himself had begun to organize a team to infiltrate the Forest Temple and search for the Mirror of Twilight shard, choosing his apprentice Sir Josh Dragelion as his second for this mission. With his performance in the Battle of Eldin, Sir Dragelion was trusted to handle a situation like this with the degree of seriousness that it required. There was no room for error here, and no room for failure. And while his methods were unique... Sir Dragelion had rarely failed them. But Princess Marianne had then insisted on going along on the Forest Temple expedition herself, which further complicated things. Well, the wording she used was "lead" the expedition, but... "You understand what needs to be done?" Captain Tethras and Sir Dragelion could still hear rattling in their heads. The King had been far from happy, but there was an understanding that the Princess was still an adult and very much liable to do as she liked in this case. If Leon was allowed to do it, why wasn't she? But with her importance to the line of succession, especially as she had been chosen as the likely next in line should the King fall, it was obvious as to why there was some unease in all of this. On top of that, it hadn't been all that long ago that the Princess herself had gone missing, with no real inkling on where she had been. These were answers that she had seemingly been unable to provide. Where had she gone? What had happened to her? And what circumstances had led to her return? What if she was still dealing with weakness and just wasn't showing it? What if she was going to push herself too hard and endanger her health jumping straight into a highly dangerous expedition like this? There were just too many variables... Why did it have to be this expedition in particular, they had to ask. Especially not this expedition. Scouts had reported that the area in which the Mirror piece apparently lay, had taken on corruptive properties, they said. The place was crawling with monsters that held the same aura as the ones reported appearing in the Battle of Eldin. Even the trees, the waters, the ground itself appeared to be taken by some kind of taint. This was further emphasized by the fact that much of the scouting party had not returned. Many of them had been taken by monsters falling upon them, as if expecting them... And others by the environment, things that they couldn't see. This was far from anything that they had dealt with before. Which might explain why the King had appointed Knight Captain Barrett Tethras himself for the job. Nobody in the Army of Hyrule was as strong, as celebrated and as experienced on the field as the good Captain, people said. He had been a trusted man for Leon and Marianne's father for many years, if anyone was going to pull this off, it was him. But the King was very uneasy on the idea that his sister wished to join the expedition. And as such, King Leon had given Captain Tethras and Sir Dragelion specific orders to protect her. Which meant not having her on the front line. Luckily, if there was such a thing, her tutor, the Lady Ursula, had demanded she come along herself. The Lady made many uneasy with her intimidating presence alone, but one couldn't deny that she was a powerful and talented magic user. And the Captain had found a rather pointed scroll on his desk that was very convincing. Due to Marianne's surprise decision to join the expedition, one of her trusted, the Sheikah Chaska had chosen to come along as well in order to serve as her protection. Which the Knights hoped would put the concern for the Princess out of their minds enough to focus on the task at hand -- the Mirror of Twilight. Last but not least, with the rumors that the Forest Temple was haunted by spirits, and the scouts talking about the possible supernatural elements that had taken several of their men, Josh had explained the situation to the gravekeeper Vlad, who had chosen to come along. Why? One, because spirits. And two, because the sooner this mirror was put back together, the less bodies he'd have to bury. Win/win for Vlad, really. But Josh had recommended Vlad to the Captain personally and had cited that he would be a capable hand in this delicate mission. The royal retinue would cross the swamps. At first, they would find themselves nearly engulfed with what seemed like a toxic fog that was slowly entrenching on them... And then all of a sudden, the fog was gone. There were no monsters. The place was damp, covered in vines and had clearly not been touched in many, many years, but... While it was clear to everyone there that something was wrong with this place -- most could feel a tingle up their spine that they couldn't explain -- there appeared to be no immediate dangers. With the Captain lighting a lantern in order to help them see in the dark, hey were able to make their way to the entrance of the Forest Temple without issue. Almost as if something had let them in. Had let them cross... Expecting them. The entrance to the Temple was covered in moss, but there was something else to it as well... Little black splotches along the surface that almost seemed to ooze. Captain Tethras forbade anyone from touching them. "It's best we make camp, and come up with a strategy in the morning" the Captain decided. They were tired from the journey, it had been a long, arduous walk, and if the inside of the Temple was dangerous... They needed all the strength that they could get. On top of that, it wasn't like they would be going anywhere anytime soon, for there was one problem. There didn't appear to be an actual entrance. Rubble and decay had blocked off where there may have been an entrance to the place. The scouting party had said as much too. Those who survived getting here had found only a dead end. But the temple was here, they knew it! They needed to find a way in... No sooner did the tents begin to be set up for camp, and the swamp seemed to get even darker than one thought possible, did Josh suddenly speak up. "Guard up!" came the young Hylian's voice as Captain Tethras ignited a lantern just in time for them to see some kind of creature right in front of Marianne. The creature, a monkey, panicked when the lantern came on and jumped at Marianne! Any attempts to help her would be unnecessary as it jumped off just as quickly and darted off. But Marianne would soon realize... Something was missing! The monkey meanwhile, had taken off towards the temple entrance before disappearing by the time the Captain caught up to it. "Blast, where could it have gone?" the Captain growled as he began searching the area for where the creature might be hiding. "Captain, if I may?" Josh spoke up as he walked over, examining the area before them. "Nobody was harmed, so I wouldn't worry too much. But... The monkey can't have just disappeared, right? There isn't much place it could have escaped to in such a short time. Is it possible that there's another entrance hidden here?" |
