"It's.. fine. I know you did what you felt you had to do. I.. I think everything will work out this way..."
Mary nodded with gratitude to the Kokiri's answer, although her eyes were still fixated at the sight of the unconscious men on the tree trunk, what was left on her thoughts seemingly still consuming her mind. It was quite unnerving, on second observation, how she could knock them out cold from this distance. Certainly unfair playing field if there ever was one.
"I am not sure I felt I had to do that," she sighed, "In fact, sometimes I am not sure what I should do at all...."
It really was quite startling to hear such tone coming from the woman, especially one with such an icy cold stare as she had before when she had the men's lives literally on her hands. What was actually behind her actions? What did she actually feel? It was as if she was switching masks with ease.... But then, which one was the real one?
For a few moments she kept standing, seemingly lost in thought, until the Kokiri's question seemingly dragged her back to reality. She looked upwards, towards the clear evening sky painted by the last rays of the dying sun, peeking through the foliages. "The sun set from that direction, and we are going south. So we should generally follow this trail," she said, pointing to the direction opposite of where the men laid unconscious. "Actually, the Evenstar will appear soon, so we'll get a surer point of reference then."

At that time a rustle was heard from above as few leaves and twigs fell down. Mary was alert again, but soon turned into relief as the familiar shape of Donna the monkey climbed down the nearest tree and hopped on her shoulder. Almost reflexively, Mary's hand ruffled her head, giving her a gentle caress. Her sweet smile had returned.
"We ended up unscathed, Donna. It is good that we did not need any backup."
So, the monkey was sent out of the sight of the men so that she might act as a surprise backup should Mary was caught unaware. This Mary was really prepared for anything.
Her hand still on her monkey, she turned towards the Kokiri. For the first time, there was hesitation in her expression.
She exhaled. "Personally I.... I really want to go with you all the way to Ordon Village, Braedynne. Edelweiss.... I'd feel more at ease knowing you have arrived there safely.... Though I by no means doubt your ability to get there even without my help...." Polite. Even looking unsure like she was, she still took care not to make the Kokiri felt too inadequate. "But... if you'd feel safer going there without me, then I understand, and will hold nothing against you. You've seen what I can do...."
She bit her lips.
"... I won't blame you if you now feel wary about me."
Marianne remembered it all still. The fear. The rejection. The expression of the castle inhabitants when her dark magic went out of control. [ link ] How could she forget? The shame of being a Royal Princess with such kind of diabolical power had been etched forever in her soul....
