the character
For years the name of Magnus Glaurung, a knight of Hyrule, was sung in praise of his heroics and kindness to the people.
"He has the strength of a dozen," soldiers told after witnessing him slay beasts like they were nothing.
"He has a heart to show kindness to all," the people told, as he ever so often in patrols and out of duty went out of his way to help the people he could.
"The Ebon Knight is a champion of the Hylian," admirers would say, hearing of yet another tale of his heroic deeds, speculating what greatness awaits.
"I find it impossible that a man as gorgeous and noble as he would not have found someone already," others would speculate of the hero's relations.
But that's all in the past now. The only thing you'd get out of most people would be a dismissive attitude alongside a look of disdain at the mere mention of his name. The once-a-hero had abandoned his position, and while his retirement had been a shock, few outside of his family begrudged him over it. No, it was not that, but the man no coming to aide the people in their time of need at any point in these trying times.
Oh no, instead of helping the people, he seems far too content simply traveling around without a care, as if none of it concerns him, and only stories you anymore here are of his hedonistic exploits, though whether or not any of them are true most of those who once admired the man are more than willing to take such unflattering stories at face value out of disdain for what the hide knight had become.
A hero? What a joke.
background
• The noble house of Glaurung was a family comprised of military men and women which had gained its status through military exploits. In later generations, however, the descendants would choose other occupations, slowly losing relevancy and becoming somewhat wealthy merchants instead.
• Magnus was the firstborn of Lyre and Kelia and would become the older brother for one brother and two sisters in the coming years.
• Magnus already at a young age proved hardier and stronger than most children, and in his early teens this apparent difference only became more evident and his talent for combat seemed obvious.
• His parents seeing this potential in him urged their son to join the military, and with time could convince him, as he had no real plans of his own anyway, and by the age of 16, Magnus E. Glaurung had become the first of his line to become a soldier in five generations.
• Very early on he stood out from most of the soldiers and time after time would prove himself strong and capable in battle, gaining the attention of many higher-ups.
• In recognition of his prowess and efforts Magnus got promoted from a soldier to a knight at a relatively young age, and his name only began to spread around more and more.
• Through the years Magnus' heroic deeds in battle saving lives and slaying beasts right down to the consideration and efforts to help the common people when he had the chance earned him the admiration and praise of many, which would in turn as well elevate the Glaurung family. These deeds as well had Magnus earn plenty of wealth alongside his knight status, which he'd use to elevate the living standards of his family. Many called him a hero of the people, and few had bad to say about him. After all, he was a kind man, a loyal knight, and an obedient soldier.
• The day Magnus has turned 40, the knight had come to an epiphany. He had for the longest time just been fine with going along with what was expected of him. To have his path decided by others. He had never really lived for himself, nor did he truly know what he wished of himself. Well, it was time for him to decide. He had lived long enough for the sake of others, so it was now time for him to finally live for himself.
• With no ceremony or fanfare Magnus retired as a knight. From there he proceeded to sell off everything he'd bought and kept in his family's mansion for traveling funds to which his parents had not taken well to and disowned the man after finding out he had been trying to sell off the mansion as well.
• It took some weeks for the news to even spread around the military and some more for the people to find out. There would be confusion and reason over him leaving, but overall the attitude the people had over his decision was acceptance and hope the man would enjoy his early retirement. This would, however, change with time, and opinions on Magnus would sour with times becoming more and more worrying, and the man would ignore calls for help. The worst of this was the Battle of Eldin and after him ignoring the Hyrule's forces' call for his assistance any good faith towards the memory of Magnus the hero would turn into resentment.
• Magnus has for the past three years spent just going wherever he likes, learning and experiencing new things, as well as just enjoying life for nobody but himself. He's found a passion in food (eating and cooking) as well as writing about his experiences. The man's happy, and he couldn't feel more satisfied over his decision and would not give it away, nor does he feel like he owes anything to anyone.
personality
Magnus is a calm and collected man, never having been one to have himself overwhelmed by the things happening around him, and seems to have the ability to keep his cool no matter to the point of seeming aloof. As if he's unaffected by the things happening around him. This isn't true, however, though he certainly isn't as easily emotionally swayed as most.
Despite this exterior, the man sure is talkative and once he finds himself interested in something, or simply on a whim, he can blather on and on to no end and can get incredibly nosy over said targets of his interest. These chats and interactions with him showcase a rather teasing and playful side of him, and he derives amusement over getting a reaction out of people. It's to get to know them in a way, though he does like to do this simply by questioning them over a lot of things and he really likes to go in deep and continue prodding to get as much information as he can to understand people. Getting to understand the views and beliefs of people can be rather interesting, after all. This curious nature of his extends to things in general too, new experiences and things always managing to interest him.
Magnus also shows a caring for people, often having done acts of kindness and helped people around no matter what, though he did that oftentimes just because it is expected of him, but he still from time to time does bother to help out people he comes across. He's not cold-hearted after all and does have the basic capacity to want to help out those in need before him, although if someone else in the vicinity will do it instead he'll gladly let them do so.
This doesn't change the fact that Magnus is inherently a selfish man. For too long he'd allowed his life and behavior to be dictated by others so he doesn't plan and restricting himself with such things no longer, and doesn't feel the obligation to give away his happiness and enjoyment for others. He'd much rather ignore such requests and keep up with his hedonistic ways and wants, living for the simple joys of life.
extra
• Magnus carries with him many a journal, all filled to the brim with detailed notes and memoirs of his experiences, as well as rather detailed sketches of people, food, animals, and sights that have caught his interest.
• The armor he still wears to this day had been gifted to him by the Royal Family, and his greatsword, Blutfang, was a recreation by a master Goron smith of the blade depicted in some paintings of past Glaurung men and women.
• Magnus' younger brother is a musician, one sister a tailor, and the other a dancer. Unlike with his parents, he has maintained good relations overall with them and still communicates with them with letters. He had always been close with his siblings and managed to stay close with them due to the consideration and encouragement he'd given to them in the past to pursue their passions.
• He loves food, and throughout his travels has collected many a recipe and learned to cook to always be able to experience at least a small piece of his travels no matter where he is. Enjoys sharing his cooking because he thinks it's a better way to let someone learn about his experiences rather than telling about them (though he's never against blathering about those either).
• Magnus has no particular enjoyment or disdain for combat, despite his experience and praiseworthy capabilities. He does, however, oftentimes go out of his way to take down beasts on his own or through jobs to ensure he doesn't get rusty.
• He sends food reviews to the Hyrule Chronicles through the alias of "A Traveler" rating the meals of the places he visits. It's a surprisingly popular section and his positive reviews have boosted business for more than a couple of places.
• Though the most gifted with a two-handed sword, Magnus does have a knack for a spear and has learned how to fight unarmed. You never know what situations you end up in, after all.
• Stands 6'3" tall, and has a strong, well-built body riddled in scars.
