Morning at the Hyrule Castle was a remarkably tidy affair.
Cresselia adjusted the maid cap on her head and picked up her duster. Come day, the halls and walkways of the castle would be bustling with activities, Throngs of people from all social strata, all with their own needs and their own agenda would flock to the Castle, filling a petition, invitation, requests, and what-have-you. It would be nearly impossible to keep the castle pristine during daytime. Well, except the private quarters, of course. No one went there but the royals and their households.
That was why, Cresselia rather liked the morning hours, when it was still quiet and the walls seemed to yawn under the gentle morning light, the night flames flickered like dancers giving their final bow.
She entered the grand Throne Room, with its high throne looming in the background of the opulent marble decoration which adorned the centerpiece of the castle. In this dim light the throne looked like a sleeping beast or perhaps a dragon, looking down on everyone who entered its lair.
Cresselia gulped. Thank Nayru it was just a throne.
She was grateful that instead of walking to the foreboding throne, she entered a small antechamber on the side of the throne room. This small antechamber, an unassuming wall of cold stone walls and high windows, adorned with nothing but a great Oak Table with several chairs around, was recently becoming the fulcrum of activity of the whole castle, more so than the Throne Room itself.
It was Princess Marianne’s reception room.
With the king being mostly absent in his various duties, the diligent Princess had conducted the internal workings of the kingdom from this very room, and she did so admirably. True, she was officially just one of the advisors, or regent in the event of the King’s absence. But the princess’ influence and importance was such that she was effectively the one being looked up to nowadays. Nobles and ministers vied for her favour and feared her wrath, and her agents were seemingly everywhere that nothing really escaped her attention. It helped also that she was highly competent at what she did. The Army adored her and the Merchant benefitted from her ever-expanding reform, although she realistically could not satisfy every party. For every progress there must be sacricife, but so far the princess seemed to bring Hyrule to the right direction. Even Cresselia’s family received a windfall when the Land Appropriation Act was passed through the council, in insistence of the princess herself.
Cresselia was glad to serve such a hard-working monarch.
Opening the door to Princess Marianne’s reception room, the maid automatically walked to the nearest candle stand to put off the light, for the room needed no artificial lighting during the day.
It was then that she noticed that the room was not as empty as she thought it to be.
“Y-Your Highness!” she shouted, eyes wide in surprise, “It-it is a pleasant surprise! Early in the morning, w-what might be…?”
“Oh, good morning, Cresselia,” Her tone was gentle. Really, she did not treat her servants differently than she treated others, “I am just finishing a few drafts that is all.”
Her hand waved vaguely towards the stack of paper on the table. She stood.
“Now that you are here, can I ask you to deliver my message to Miss Eva when she arrived?”
“B-but of course, Ma’am,” In haste the maid swept a very low curtsy, still a little confused, “Anything for you.”
There was a wide smile on Marianne’s face as she chuckled, “Oh, worry not, Cresselia. Just a few pointers, that is all. Please tell her that she will find a few corrections on Lord Darrin’s proposal yesterday.” She raised a stack of papers, and set it aside. “Also, The Merchants’ Guild was right on their concern about our harbors. I’ve added a few memos and also some inquiries that I would like to be delivered to the proper ministry. She can find it here.” Another stack of papers was set aside. “Lastly, I’ve prepared a foreword for the book made by Professor Resmowr as requested -so kind of him! It is there to be reviewed by him.”
“Uh, Lord Darrin’s proposal, The Merchant Guild, and Professors foreword,” the maid counted with her fingers, “Got it, Ma’am. I’d deliver your message to Lady Eva.”
“I’ve left her a memo too, just in case. But I’d feel better if someone else will remind her. Someone I can trust.”
The maid grinned, clearly feeling happy at the subtle prasie. She curtsied low once more.
“You honored me, Your Highness. I’ll make sure your message be delivered."
She tilted her head slightly to the side. “But, where are you going this early in the morning, Ma’am? If-if I may ask?”
She noticed the princess was already wearing her trusty crimson cloak over her travelling attire, and was already clasping her brooch on her shoulders when she lifted up her head at the maid’s question.
“Oh…this? Mmm there is someone interesting that I wish to pay a visit to. I heard from the grapevines that she is working on an amazing invention.”
“Safe journey then, Ma’am. Please be careful.”
Smiling, the princess walked towards the door, stopping just to address her maid as she was about to cross the threshold.
Letia
Marianne can either visit Letia in the latter's workshop, or Letia can crashland on the castle instead. Either way they both would be surprised!
