”How hard would it be to track down an itinerant Darknut?”
...
“... Not hard, just impossible.”
“... Mr. Gestahl, that is…”
“An oxymoron, yes, just like this Darknut! Never in my years as an active researcher had I come across or heard of a Darknut that just wanders the fields! The princess may have seen it, yes, but let us not put aside the fact that she is the only witness so far of this unnatural phenomenon! You only ever find those fiends defending the interior of a dungeon or important artifact, often pertinent to one’s progression in such places!”
“I know that, but--”
“I wouldn’t waste my time, rookie! It is as laughable as a cuckoo that could fly!”
“Er, um--”
“Gestahl.”
“Yes, Babani?”
“There is no harm in satiating one’s curiosity. It is a part of seeking out new avenues of research.”
“... Well, yes, but--”
“And I would not laugh at the claims of the princess. It is unsightly.”
“... Right.”
“Thus, we should be grateful for the tip off, because this is the first case in a long time since we’ve heard of a monster that does not antagonize Hylians, or the other races for that matter. Little vai, go, find the Darknut. If the description serves correctly, it is a full-armored one with standard armor, but missing the crest on its helm.”
“Yes, Ms. Babani! I won’t let you down!”
“Ah, before I forget, since we received a higher status within the research branch, we have been given means to hire someone to guard you.”
“Really?!”
“In fact, since I anticipated this trip, I’ve already slotted someone to help you.”
“Oh, that’s wonderful! Whom have you hired?!”
“You’ll find out. He’s quite a figurehead.”
“... Eh?”
The investigation was embarked upon without delay, and questions were asked of travelers who had recently arrived in the city of a wandering Darknut, or otherwise described as “a walking suit of armor.” Most who had arrived, however, reported more of the same: monster numbers rising and the increased peril on the road.
However, one lead had come up in the form of a Kakariko merchant who had taken the north road to the castle.
“... I did see something odd. A walking suit of armor, right? It was heading north on the Upper Eldin plateau, toward the bridge. It was moving slowly, but it looked dangerous, so I kept my distance and let it be.”
With that lead, Phoebe met with the fellow who would be in charge of her safety, someone she didn’t think would actually come to the aid of the MRC: Sir Josh Dragelion. She had felt rather embarrassed of him since her trip to the Domain, as she had not believed his identity at first, but due to Phima’s affirmation of his identity, an awkwardness developed in her heart. It wasn’t a social awkwardness, but something that she would carry with her the rest of her time spent on this excursion.
Sir Dragelion hadn’t done anything wrong to warrant her behavior, of course--at least, as far as she could tell.
“I’m surprised that you had signed on for this,” said Phoebe with a frank tone as they walked toward a stable, “None of the elders bribed you, did they?”
