"For my Kingdom...
Josh’s viewpoint was indeed simple. Lives were worth more than money. This man did not see that worth, thus his ability to weigh cost was in doubt. But perhaps that was a subject to take up with her brother one day. "I was joking, Your Highness. But I wouldn't recommend walking in my shoes either" he spoke up with a soft laugh. "They're a bit worn out." He smiled softly, patiently, at her explanation as she explained just why she couldn't amend her traditions. “Perhaps I don’t understand the depth of its significance, but I’m not saying don’t be the one to swear knights in” the knight admitted. “But you, young lady, are about to get a good old fashioned Barrett Tethras lecture” he suddenly brought up, the amusement rising in his tone as he cleared his throat. His voice became gruff and hard as he imitated his dear mentor. “Take care of your long term! You can’t fight if you can’t move! Take care of your body now so you can fight tomorrow! Eat right and sleep like you’re running a ten day marathon. The best soldier is one that’ll be alive in ten years and can still fight!” He coughed a few times and cleared his throat amongst his laughter. He clearly held affection for the Knight Commander, despite their past differences. He returned to his regular voice. “The old guy’s grilled me a hundred times for straining when I’m injured. And no doubt if he saw you now, you’d be getting the same lecture. But again, I’m not saying that you should stop doing the swearing. I’m saying I think you should let us help” he corrected. “See, in Ordon, our community is smaller than Hyrule City or perhaps even Kakariko Village. But you know how we make up for that? We work together to overcome our collective weaknesses. Tio makes great quality arrows at an affordable price but doesn’t have a strong presence as a shopkeeper, and she has a sick father to take care of. So most of us buy from her locally, not only keeping her in business but giving her some confidence to build that presence. And as you know, my occupation as a knight means I need to step out from the farm often. I do my best to manage both, but even I need help sometimes. Those who make a living as farmhands keep in pretty constant contact with me especially and try to prioritize my schedule if I don’t have anyone lined up. In a few emergency cases, some villagers will even chip in themselves if I have to suddenly step out and don’t have anyone to ensure the livestock’s cared for. I give it my best, but even my style has flaws. But I have the people in Ordon to thank for my ability to overcome them when I can’t do it myself. And I pay it forward the best I can on my off days.” Then, to the task at hand. “So let’s apply that logic here. You are still verbally swearing in the new knight, right? You’re still going through the effort of organizing things, memorizing all the lines, memorizing the format of the ceremony, conducting and judging them, all of that. Your weakness is that you’re hurting yourself lifting that sword by yourself. So, if I were the Knight Commander, the first thought I’d have would be… Why don’t I lift it along with you? Stand at your side and ease the weight. The task may be yours, but that doesn’t mean I can’t help you overcome your weaknesses. That’s just how a team works. How a community works. We offset each other’s weaknesses to benefit the whole. And yes, it may be a… Unique way to end the ceremony compared to the norm, but unique circumstances like yours require unique solutions.” He smiled. “And old Tethras really does want to see us old and grey and still able to fight like we’re 20. I don’t think either of us want to disappoint him. And I think he’d agree when I say… Anyone who’d be offended by you needing a hand, should be ashamed of themselves. Whether that’s for dinner… Or a ceremony.” He wanted to say they would be stupid and selfish, but he went for softer language this time. He reached over and gently raised her glass to her lips, slowly helping her get her drink in before setting it down. He’d found time to eat while Marianne was talking, so he didn’t mind. |
For my people... I need to do this."
