The night was crisp and bright.
Marianne looked at the clear sky above her, at the multitude of twinkling stars which seemed to dance merrily. Though her view was half-obscured by the thick branches and foliage which covered this forgotten road, she could still see the full moon shining proudly up there, its light penetrating even the dense cover and set the tangled roots on the ground alight. The wind this night was cool and soft –a velvet robe silently weaving through the slim fingers of the trees. It was a night which would made a poet remember the fondest breath of her lover. A night filled with hopes and introspection, of dreams and memories under a sky full of stars. Somewhere far away, a wolfos howled sorrowfully.
Something soft passed her feet as she carefully made her way through the twisting turns of this moss-covered path. She looked down and saw her cat, Irio, who also looked up at her with his round, yellow eyes.
Marianne smiled and bent down to scratch the cat between his ears. The cat purred, closing his eyes, before resuming his walk beside Marianne. A small hop, and he stoppen on top a thick root, meowing softly.
“Don’t worry, Irio,” cooed Marianne, “It should not be long until we find the main road.”
She straightened her back and turned to look at the dark road from whence she came. There, somewhere among the entangling trees and broad-leaved bushes… her great grandmother would be sitting near the window of her cottage, watching Marianne made her way back to the castle.
She was the only family from her father’s side whom Marianne knew of. Though she was a Princess of Hyrule, her father was not the late king Daphnes. In fact, her royal blood was wholly bequeathed from the late queen, who herself was descended from a line of rulers. Marianne's father, Marianne's real father, was a famous general of Hyrule military, the hero of seventeen battles during the tumultuous time of Great Disturbance. He sacrificed himself along with some of his loyal troops to save the bulk of his Redwing Battallion during a Bublin Ambush in Gerudo Desert the very day after Marianne was born. And so, Marianne had never known her father, apart from some pictures of him and many stories told by grizzled veterans, who fondly recounted the exploits of her father with loving tears in their eyes.
And she would have known no one from his father’s side were it not for her great-grandmother. For reasons unknown The Royal Family forbid anyone to tell Marianne about her real lineage. So, imagine little Marianne’s surprise and fear when a wrinkled Gerudo witch suddenly appeared in her bedroom one night, embracing her and claiming that her own blood flowed in the young Princess. Marianne would never forget that night.
Eventually, she did know the truth from her mother and her adoptive father The King, who both still vowed to love her as they do their own children despite everything. Marianne had long ago got over the feeling of her not belonging in The Royal Family, but she still remembered the first few years when she felt timid and strange. How she felt she was not on the same level as Trixie and Leon. How she felt they were always superior. Always better. Always…legitimate.
Her toes hit a concealed roots and she staggered forward, but managed to held on to a thick tree trunk before she fell. Irio meowed beside her, as if chiding her. She grinned, half-apologizing for her temporary lapse absent-mindedness.
‘Right. No need to remember the past.’
