Phoebe's ears drooped down as her face was now cherry with shame. She knew Dormagoro's name incorrectly all this time, and worse yet she had been sending him messages with that alias. Who knew what kind of confusion she had wrought from that? Oh, and worse yet was her misspeaking of his occupation! She almost wanted to bury her head in the dust right here!

Just... just move on, Phoebe! Don't let it bother you too much!

She was interrupted in her self-loathing by Dormagoro's frenetic dancing. The rookie had heard that Gorons do love to dance, but... there was no music.

Oh, he's panicking. It's quite natural to feel that way, I do admit...

As the two of them interacted, Phoebe tugged the picture from her backpack, which she realized had been bent slightly on the corner from having shoved the pictograph in her bag.

"Oh... bollocks."

The little things can often sour a good day.

Even so, she looked deeply at the developing film and jolted slightly. The picture was surprisingly good! Dormagoro's head was completely in frame, and he was smiling?

Well, this is a pleasant surprise. I must've caught him when he was pronouncing 'sworn...'

Phoebe looked up as Marianne mentioned them as 'the centerpiece of this expedition.' She folded her hands with the picture tucked between her fingers.

It took a while, but with Marianne's soothing words had brought Dormagoro's nervous jitters back under control. Of course, he overreacted about it but how often does a lowly warrior of the Goron tribe find themselves in the company of the princess of Hyrule? The odds were definitely slim but here he was and seeing the Goron salute definitely brought him back to the world. Not many people greeted Gorons in this manner since most of it was ceremonial to some degree, but seeing it himself brought him back to a time when he was recognized by the elders for his heroics. That was such a long time ago, but nonetheless the memory was alive and well.[break][break]

"Ahhh, my apologies, Princess! It's been some time a dignitary set foot upon Death Mountain, I feel ashamed to not provide the adequate reception for your arrival. Please forgive Dormagoro!" The Goron pleaded, still somewhat shook from the issue. "Although, I am glad to hear the Princess is well-prepared but without prior notice of the standing regiment at the borders, well, I don't think the Chief and elders would overlook this." He heavily sighed at the thought, scratching at the white mop of hair upon his head. "Such complicated business. Wish stuff were simple for us all."

Dormagoro then looked back to Phoebe, then shifted his focus on the tiny box she had. "Oho! Looks like you're set in search of Dodongos! I hope that tiny box can withstand heat. The place we will be searching is quite warm and we might have to pop in a cavern or two once more!"

The greeting was for what it was: a traditional gesture known only to The Gorons themselves and those with intimate knowledge of their culture. Marianne was pleased that Dormagoro seemed to notice, and how her salute seemed to calm him a little. Her tutors taught her that everyone love seeing another who do things the same way they do it themselves. Marianne took this to heart. It was not a coincidence that she was widely considered one of the best diplomats available to The Royal Family, even when the late king was still alive.

She gracefully nodded as the kindhearted Goron uttered another apology, taking care to not seen as dismissive of his genuine concern yet also not overly concerned with it either.

“There is nothing for me to forgive, Head Chef Dormagoro,” came her reply, with a subtle praise to his own status. ”For neither you, nor your proud clan, is at fault. Please, don’t burden yourself with such thoughts anymore. If anything I am the one who should apologize for not sending prior notice to our Chief of The Gorons, as is usually expected. It is not in my right to demand any reception at all.”

‘Of course, it should have been the Monster Research Council who prepared the reception and all the necessary arrangements,’ Marianne thought gleefully, ‘This trip has been planned three days in advance, after all. A simple notification would not have been very hard.

Now I wonder if Lady Phoebe’s trip into Death Mountain is even… legal?’

“If this is of any consolation to you, Dormagoro, I will personally go and meet with Honored Chief Solveig myself after our expedition, with proper notice,” The Princess continued with a winning smile, “I will explain anything that needs to be explained then. Worry not. I shall make this simple for us all.”

But then she grinned somewhat mischievously, “Assuming, of course, that we survive this expedition."

Hearing Dormagoro's words, Marianne's face beamed with expectation of the unknown. "I humbly put myself in your care, Phoebe. Dormagoro. Let us start our journey.”

And with a royal decree, the trio should begin their expedition. If no new knowledge comes out of this, and if The Princess sees no merit in MRC Survival Initiative, then their hope of funding would be dashed. While Marianne was clearly enjoying herself, another pair of eyes secretly began her objective evaluation….

“Yes, right, let us begin, no better time than the present,” Phoebe nodded to the princess as she moved to the mouth of the path. As she passed Marianne, the pictograph in hand was given to her with a wordless smile. From there, she addressed the Goron, “You needn’t worry about my equipment, Mr. Dormagoro. So long as I don’t fall in a lava pool or have need to dive toward the ground, everything should hold up.”

Before they would go up the trail, she began with a statement. “In the absence of my mentor, the Baba Florist, Kedari Babani, I, Phoebe Arkwright, will take charge of this expedition.” For it was said in their meeting that Ms. Babani expressed she would join them. “Let’s go!”

Of course, there was far more on her mind, she hadn’t realized how great of a deal it was when a dignitary was to travel. Perhaps it was due to her being closely associated or within the proximity of the Royal Family that such things were commonplace? Just how much was she lacking in handling these kinds of situations? Sure, they’ve been planning for this expedition for more than a week, and there was plenty going on behind the scenes to make this trip possible, but if Ms. Babani was here, everything would have gone so much smoother, and none of the previous mistakes would have happened, or explained away.

Her hands clasped together as she looked into the blue sky. Ah... if only Ms. Babani was here...

But she was not.

At this point, Phoebe felt it: she must remind herself that while she may be a rookie, she is a professional! Learn from the mistakes! The expedition has begun! It was time to pick up on the objectives!

A thin journal was pulled from her backpack and opened to a note-filled page of objectives.

1) Ensure survival of everyone in the party.
a. Prioritize dignitaries over self.
b. Defend personal assets when possible.
c. Obey self-preservation instinct.
2) Gather research samples for laboratory study.
3) Study environmental factors.
4) Be resourceful.
5) Do not engage monsters unless further research can be acquired.

Note: To avoid point 5, ask first-hand witnesses of their experience with monsters.

Ah, yes, that’s right.

As she turned to the next page, an ornate quill was tugged from her bag, “Mr. Dormagoro,” said Phoebe, “While we’ve yet to arrive, I would like to know from your experience on how you’ve handled a Dodongo.”

The Goron rose a brow when Phoebe asked him about his past encounters with Dodongos. This was definitely good to help pass the time as they wandered up the path. "Hah! That's an easy one. If you're strong like me, you just grab them by the tail and throw them really hard against the mountain!" Dormagoro flexed a bit, thoughts wandered back to the time he tussled with his first monster. "But you gotta watch out for their fire breaths. It really burn if you don't got thick skin. Ahaha! I remember taking on my first Dodongo - sure was a big 'un! It had massive jaws and razor sharp teeth with those beady little eyes! Oooh man, probably big as those houses back in Kakariko!" The path before them was beginning to get a little warm, as what little outcropping from cliffs on either side of them darkened. There was no lava pools at this elevation but the heat was beginning to simmer through.[break][break]

"Long ago, we Gorons use to fear Dodongos because they were big and scary. Very long ago before heroes were a thing. But my great, great, great, great, great, great, great, grandfather were one of the few that stood up to those monsters. I also like to think this is how sumo came to be as he wrestled with those oversized lizards! Hehehehe! Man, to go back and see that with my own eyes." Dormagoro seemed to glow with admiration as he continued along the path. "We've been fighting Dodongos for a very long time. But! None of them compare to the monstrosity that is the King of all Dodongos! The most massive fire-breathing beast ever to walk this world." Dormagoro clenched his fist in the air, pumped up by the very thought of King Dodongo. "People say the king has long been extincted but I know he's still there, just waiting for his moment to strike!"

“Ohh! That is exciting!”

Phoebe madly scribbled down on her journal with the cursive expected of a noble, and toward the end of the Goron’s exposition, her ears flicked upward.

A... a King Dodongo?

The very thought of one caused a genial squeal to leave her body as she hopped midstride.

“That sounds absolutely terrifying, Mr. Dormagoro! If one of such magnitude exists, why, it would be undoubtedly obvious that the very foundation of the mountain would warp!" she exclaimed rather jovially, her head turned toward the princess, the topic suddenly shifting to a rather different tone. "Oh, it is getting much hotter now. How is Her Highness fairing?" Drops of sweat had long appeared on the surface of her exposed skin, and she even tugged at the hem of the fabric about her neck. "It's quite like a sauna around here."

When Phoebe passed by her, she secretly handed something to her. Marianne, being no stranger to hidden gestures reflexively received it almost as discreetly, out of habit. And also out of habit she looked at it only when she was a little behind Dormagoro and Lady Phoebe, thinking it was a secret message of some sort.

“Ah.”

A small smile appeared on Marianne seeing the beautiful pictograph. It was not a failure then…. (‘And I can call myself beautiful, right?’) She carefully put it inside her cloak, thinking that once this was over she would ask to have the pictograph. If allowed it would find a place in that most cherished box of hers, joining a golden lock of hair and a paper doll resembling her beloved Mrs von Brandt, among others.

She kept her distance a little behind the jovial Goron and the excited Lady, keeping her role as an observer but also find her spirit lifted by their playful banter. She joined the Goron in his laugh (“Really, Dormagoro? Oh my I have to see how a Dodongo is handled that way!”) and generally tried to involve herself in the conversation.

“I am fine, Phoebe. I don't mind being a little sweaty,” was her reply to Phoebe’s question, with a reassuring smile. “I shall let you know if I encounter any difficulties.”

She had unhooded her cloak, of course. But even then drops of sweat had started appearing on her forehead. Her hair had stuck on her neck. ‘If only they knew the places I’ve been through-‘

Marianne closed her eyes suddenly. 'No. Don’t. Don’t think about that time. It is over. It is over.'

It didn’t take long before she continued her steps along the others, as if nothing had happened.

“The last mention of a King Dodongo in our annals was around five hundred years ago, I think” she stated matter-of-factly without sounding too obnoxious, “It is told that it caused massive damage to Kakariko Village before being defeated, or so the story goes.” She shuddered, “I do hope there is none left. Or if there is, that it stays deep in the mountain. We cannot afford anymore destruction….”

Why must it that she spun a gloomy curtain over everything? Marianne didn’t realize it herself but it could be said that way. Perhaps too many things in one’s mind was not healthy. A mysterious Darknut.... A rebellious noble….

She continued her walk. “I wonder, Dormagoro, why did you volunteer to be our guide?” she said, addressing the Goron, “It is rare to be guided by The Head Chef of The Goron himself on an expedition like this.”

What she meant was that The Goron Chef usually stayed being… well, a chef. In the spacious Dining Hall.

Dormagoro couldn't help but give a hearty laugh. "Ahuahuahuaha! Dormagoro ain't no chef - that's just my hobby. I'm first and foremost a warrior! But I ensure my Brothers are fed well... even if they prefer simple sirloin rocks over my culinary attempts." The Goron's voice trailed off a bit, hinted with slight disappointment. "Besides, I owe Phoebe a trip. It's the least I can do. Usually, we have a Brother guide people through Death Mountain but the battle did a number on the place. Everyone is working very hard to make things right again." A part of him felt guilty when he brought up the Battle of Eldin. Even when he fought just as hard as any other Brother, it didn't seem like it was enough. His home was torn up and the eruption had caused headaches for many. Of course, they could rebuild just like they have before but that took time and it felt like time was against them.[break][break]

"No worries! I know this mountain like that back of my hand. I'll make sure ya are safe!" Dormagoro's worries melted into a big smile as they continued further up the path. This part of Death Mountain appeared to have recently suffered. There were scorch marks splayed across large boulders and the ground beneath them was completely blackened. Various tools could be seen from giant pickaxes to mine carts filled with rubble as they ventured on. It looked as though this area was under repair and definitely much hotter than before, as one could see lava streams redirected away into pools. "Oh oh, watch yer step. When the volcano went kaboom, much of the lava managed to seeped down here. We plugged most of them and moved the lava into areas to make the paths safer."

Phoebe took the liberty to write what Marianne had also mentioned of the King Dodongo of old. That is true, a beast of that magnitude could only spell disaster for a place like ramshackle Kakariko. It truly was a tough town to remain in its place for so long.

"Hmm..." the rookie tapped the feather end of her quill on the surface of her journal, then noticed its feather tips had begun to curl. "... Oh, dear me, I do declare that it is rather unsafe for delicate items to be out." She put away the journal and quill posthaste and closed her bag tightly. Now that her nose was out of the book, she took a good look at the terrain about them.

"My, this is..." she placed a hand on her chin, "... Well, it's hot. So we have our first look at lava up close here! I figure it would be good to mention that lava is what is outside of the Din's Crust, while magma is what is referred to what is inside? I suppose you could say that Din is quite magmanimous to let us see it! Hoho? Haha?" Her fingers pointed at Dormagoro, then the princess as she shown an expression of jest.

“Is that so? That is a quite a hobby to be appointed as The Head Chef!” Marianne eyes glinted. “You have to let us try your dishes after this trip, Dormagoro. I insist.”

“Just… no rocks for me and Phoebe, I am afraid…,” she added, half-serious, half in jest.

Hearing about The Battle of Eldin, the princess’ expression darkened. “And I apologize about The Battle of Eldin…. It was partly our lapse in vigilance and confusion of governance which allowed such a giant horde of monsters to exist.“ The bitter taste in her voice was unmistakable. “To have even affected our friends the Goron…. I promise I’ll do my best not to let such a disaster happen.”

It was strange to remember that the fate of an entire kingdom rested upon the thin shoulders of this unassuming woman, her bow and quiver slung on her back. Yet she did have an expression which said, no matter what, she would get through and she would win. Such was Her Highness resolve.

And now, they were approaching the spot where there were open pools of lava. It seemed to originate from the depths of Death Mountain itself, flowing sluggishly on canals which some seemed to be hand made. Marianne looked with interest at the way the Gorons redirected the lava. Perhaps she could steal some of their design ideas for her engineers to control the flooding of Hyrule Field from the great lake.

"What happened here, Dormagoro….?” she asked softly, moving to examine a cart full of rubbles. It was then that she caught glimpse of Phoebe’s quill curled from the heat. The Princess immediately reached for her pouch inside her cloak, rummaging for something.

"So we have our first look at lava up close here! I figure it would be good to mention that lava is what is outside of the Din's Crust, while magma is what is referred to what is inside? I suppose you could say that Din is quite magmanimous to let us see it! Hoho? Haha?"

“She is. It is the proof of her sacrifice, in some legends…,” she replied solemnly to Phoebe’s quip. “It was her toil which fashioned the world, including those within it. Some even said the lave of underground is her own blood….”

As she said so she walked closer to Phoebe and handed her a quill and a rather thin journal with a smile.

“I think I can help with your predicament, Phoebe. Please allow me to.” Her smile was almost teasing. “One of my magic teachers collaborated with a scientist of the academy and produced this.” She showed the rather ordinary looking quill and journal proudly. “The sheet and quill will stand even in extreme heat or cold, and the ink won’t stop flowing in any condition! You can even write underwater with it. Although I have only tried it twice….”

She blinked. “It is just…It sometimes disappear and reappear at will so please be careful where you put it. That is why it is still not on the market…. But you can have this one, if you wish. I have plenty- Oh wait, let me take away my own notes first.”

And she proceeded to rip a few sheets containing, among others, a drawing of a rather pretty Zora and what seemed to be a detailed scheme of Termina’s Clock Town. She then carefully tucked them inside her cloak before graciously handing Phoebe the journal and the pen with a smile.

The Goron looked to Marianne then back to the marred landscape. "While the volcano had erupted during the Battle of Eldin, it constantly stirs beneath the surface. It rumbles and hungers for destruction. Now fissures happen. Our people managed to patch up this area but we are wary to the fact it will happen again." Of course, there was more to the tale but Dormagoro felt it was more pressing to his tribe rather than visitors of Death Mountain. In fact, many of his Brothers had not slept well since the battle so ongoing repairs were at a snail's pace. However, they were careful about their operations since plenty of Hylians come to trade or learn the art of being a blacksmith so nothing was left to chance. Every rock dam was meticulously built to withstand tremors and the logistics was there to guide lava streams away from the path and populace. They spent every waking hour to ensure the safety of everyone on Death Mountain but that wasn't the only problem.[break][break]

"Say, were not that far off, but we gotta leave the path now." Dormagoro mentioned as he took careful steps away from the path towards the crags and jutting stone formations blackened by ash and fire. "Just follow my step and we'll be fine. I also brought some spring water in case ya get too hot." Even with that said in a cautious tone, Dormagoro managed to sneak them a smile along with his signature thumbs up.

Phoebe's expression deflated as her joke found no audience among her party immediate members. Why, not even a silent repose or a groan of disgust, but sound logic? There was no point in pursuing that any further, thus she puffed her cheeks.

That expression wore away immediately as the princess offered the notebook to her. "But Your Highness..." said Phoebe with raised brows. However, the claims that were made of the notebook and the quill caused her brows to rise almost to the crown of her hair. "That's... that's quite marvelous, why I would beset myself if I did not accept this..."

She could not even stop Marianne from tearing out the pages, thus Phoebe reluctantly had to accept. "Th.... thank you very much. I will pay you back for however much this cost, that is for certain!"

Dormagoro had proceeded to take them off the main road, and as such, impressed upon Phoebe a sensation of spunk. "Hoh... well, being one who has associated with the spirit of Din, I find that I'm quite resistant to this heat!" That is, she still sweated quite profusely, "That being said! Spring water would be wonderful to splash onto myself right about now." She loosened her bag and tugged a water sack from it, then began drinking quite steadily. When she was done, the sack was returned to her back and she wiped the sweat from her body, "As it is, the very water in my canteen is akin to drinking tepid soup."

“Please don’t worry about payment, Phoebe,” The Princess replied, waving her hand in a polite dismissal, “I don’t ask for any. I doubt Lord Polus would- Oh wait. Please record how you use the notebook and if you find any shortcomings in its capability. I think that would be of great interest for him!”

“And you have to promise me to allow me to bring you to meet him one day,” she winked mysteriously, before finally released her notebook with a grin. She then quickly followed Dormagoro further into the road, as always assuming her position slightly behind the others. The fact that Dormagore deviated from the main road did not faze the adventurous royal even for a bit. She followed him with nary a change in pace, having complete trust in the honesty of Gorons.

The words of Phoebe, however, made her gaze grew distant for a moment.

One who is associated with the spirit of Din, is resistant to heat.

I am associated with the spirit of Demise.

So why is that, during that time….?

She did look at Phoebe chugging at her water sack with a weird look at her face. The reason which would become evident soon after.

“Um, Dormagoro," she asked shyly, "may I take you on that offer of spring water…? I forget to bring my own water sack….”

Her half-smile was clearly apologetic. How she could forget that most important provision in her meticulously prepared equipment, checked and double-checked by her attendants, The Princess did not know. And honestly, she would not like to know either. Somewhere, hidden among the craggy rocks in a vantage point somewhere...she could almost hear Miss Eva palming her face in annoyance…. Oh she would never let her live this down….

Dormagoro nodded to Marianne and took a moment to loosen the waterskin from his heavy-looking rucksack he carried on his shoulder. "Sure thing! People forget Death Mountain is very hot and we're not that close to the volcano! Gotta prepare or you'll faint from heat exhaustion. Very scary." After a few seconds fumbling with the sling, the friendly Goron handed over the waterskin to the young princess, although it appeared to be much larger than the one Phoebe was currently in possession of - much larger and heavier. Of course, he had listened to the researcher and her comment on the warm water in her canteen. "Ohohoh! That's good for Dormagoro! I could use that to whip up my field specialty; Hightail Medley. It's a special blend of Goron spices, cubed Hightail meat, veggie blend and my secret broth! Good eating!" The Goron warrior was really fired up on the thought of food, but composed himself shortly as he rubbed the back of his head. "Hehehe. Sorry. But that water sack won't hold up here. Gotta buy a special one like mine. A combination of Dodongo leather lined with special Zora properties. Keeps the water cool for travelers."[break][break]

With that being said, their guide took the opportunity to survey the area. Aside from several lava pools, there doesn't seem to be any signs of Dodongos, for they are gluttonous creatures and often leave the bones of their prey. In this case, that would be smaller lizards and large birds tempered by the heat. Still, Dormagoro had a gut feeling they were on the right track. They just need to stay true to the goal.

"Oh, is that so? Then I will make sure to note to Lord Polus what I think of his craftsmanship when we do go to meet him." The rookie grinned.

Soon after, Dormagoro displayed the literal monster bladder that he had with him. Phoebe eyed the waterskin enviously for the size of it, and the very fact that it contained cool water! How her throat desired to be relieved by chillier drink!

She would restrain herself, however, the princess was in greater need of its contents.

"You will need to show me the producer of such waterskins, Mr. Dormagoro," she bounced her finger chidingly, "A worthwhile product like that should be on the regular market!"

That being said, she took a gander to the place they were headed. The Goron himself said they were not too far from the place where the beasts would be found... but where were they?

"Hmm. Would you say that Dodongos are rather territorial? In that they have placed a certain perimeter of where strangers ought not cross to be safe from hostilities?"
