[attr="class","section"]the appearance
Standing at 6'5, Josh has a general build that's been, pun intended, built up from growing up baling hay, pulling crops and shoving around livestock. He has years of experience in battle, giving him a muscular, yet lean build. Not too bulky, not too skinny. He has golden blonde hair, about medium in length. He has brown eyes, fair skin and pointed ears.
He is most commonly seen wearing his armor, medium weighted plate armor laced with chainlink and cloth. The armor is black in color, complimented by black gauntlets, boots and a blue hooded cape with the symbol of the Royal Family emblazoned on the front of it. Outside of work, he typically wears a blue, lightweight sleeveless cloth tunic that is meant to be able to be washed easily. Having something practical for farm work is ideal, after all. Below them he wears grey slacks and brown boots. Regardless of attire though, he almost always has his sword, bow and arrows to his side.
[attr="class","section"]the personality
Sir Dragelion has seen many things. Despite his generally warm and welcoming demeanor, those eyes tell a story of a man who has seen much suffering. He has felt love and loss, and been melded by both. But he does his best to greet the next day and all he meets with a smile, and the friends he makes along the way with loyalty and support. Growing up on a farm led to an appreciation for hard work, and a dedication to anything he commits to that stands with few to rival. He greets even a stranger as a friend, making jokes all the while if one can get him talking. He also enjoys telling stories, because what prideful warrior wouldn't be happy to tell a spiced up tale of an experience long past? Something inherited from the father, it seems.
He is proud of his abilities, but is also his harshest critic. He continuously works hard, day by day, to protect those he cherishes and the land that gave him a second chance. He has a heart that he wears on his sleeve, and a moral code that he isn't easily willing to compromise. He does not believe in superiority over others, seeing his position as a Knight as simply a statement of what he has promised to do. And he will almost always put others first.
But the field of battle brings a shift from the visual of a soft-spoken, friendly, laid-back and slightly socially awkward country boy. His expression grows cold, almost devoid of emotion. He has been taught to keep calm at all times in a battle, and survey the territory. He can be paranoid though, making him jumpy during conflict. When danger is afoot, he is deathly serious in chronic fashion, only showing emotion in the deepest throes of a battle. He is constantly calculating, constantly planning, lost in the ebb and flow of the fight. His swordsmanship and tactical prowess have reached a level befitting his experience, and his demeanor fits the bill. The adrenaline of a proud warrior can flow through him if the exhilaration of a fight drives him forward enough, but while he typically enjoys that thrill, it does not always appear if the situation is serious enough. Not to mention the rare cases where his anger shows its fangs...
Sir Dragelion fights by a code of honor, and refuses to kill a rational opponent without a good reason. But everyone has limits, and while his patience can be vast, the right triggers can set him off. His suffering in the past has been locked away, but if brought to the forefront, he can become incredibly dangerous if incensed. Ruthless and brutal, the fear of losing those he cherishes that still remain can drive him to lengths that would normally be forbidden for him.
Outside of battle, his more pointed side can show when need be. He is not afraid to be completely and utterly honest about how he feels on a subject, even if the person involved may not agree with him. If he feels something is wrong, he will voice it. To him, making these things clear is the best way to get things done. Well, besides actually doing the thing. And he is a man of action when the opportunity presents itself.
He enjoys hunting, fishing and the thrill of testing and pushing his limitations on the training yard. He enjoys the company of animals, made clear by the companions and livestock that he keeps. He is a bit of a big eater, needing to consume a healthy amount of calories considering his work schedule. Luckily he's learned to cook a decent bit himself, mainly specializing in fish and meats, but he has a few tricks up his sleeve. While he has kicked his previous alcohol addiction, he still enjoys a drink here and there as well. He has found a joy in teaching, mentoring up and coming warriors to forge their own legacies just as his father had taught him.
While in the past he sought fame, glory and recognition, now he is content with the idea of living a peaceful life with a family. He has some lingering wanderlust, and adventures some on his spare time to sate his curiosity and desire for adventure and to keep his battle senses sharp. But his priorities have changed. While he can still be ambitious, the targets of his ambition and his reasons have drastically shifted from the young, glory-seeking adventurer that he had once been. He carries a heavy burden that he does not share with others often, now more than ever as a Knight and as a crest-wielder, it is a burden that he may have sought when he was younger, but now he sees it as simply what is necessary to make his dream a reality. His biggest priority now is the safety of his loved ones, and the ability to live in peace with them. He had thought he had this, with the chance to settle down and be a father as well, but that too, was taken away from him. His goal now is to ensure that what of his family remains, and other families across Hyrule, can experience the peace he seeks. No matter what he has to do in order to reach that goal.
[attr="class","section"]background
Born on a ranch in Labrynna, Josh was born to and raised by the famed Knights of Labrynna Segnorus and Serana Dragelion. Josh grew up on two things as his foundation: Hard, backbreaking ranch work, and his father’s stories from his days as a knight. Josh grew to idolize his father, his stories enchanting him until he could think of nothing better than to follow in the footsteps of his parents and join Labrynna’s military force when he came of age. While initially worried for his safety and discouraging his wishes, his family would eventually give their blessing upon seeing how strongly his passion for his dream ran. Trained by his father and one of his former comrades in the knights, Josh was trained in the art of swordplay while continuing to work the fields, bale hay and care for the livestock in order to increase his physical strength and cardio. At the age of 18, his determination had not wavered and he was primed to enlist following the next harvest.
Unfortunately, fortune had other plans. A sect of monsters had begun rampaging in the area, pillaging and burning all in their wake. While Josh was off to hand in his registration at the capital, their farming village was attacked, leaving no survivors insight. Returning only to find the village in ruins and is home razed to the ground, Josh would only manage to procure his father’s sword and his mother’s ocarina before making his way back to the capital to look for help in driving the monsters back. Ambushed on his way to the capital, Josh was thoroughly beaten by the monsters and left for dead, only surviving thanks to the aid of a wanderer, who brought him to their home in Termina in order to nurse him back to health. Far away from home and with nowhere to go, Josh sought to make a new life in Clock Town. His father, one of the most revered knights of his time, had been given the title “DragonsFlame” by the knights for his skill in fire magic. To honor him, Josh began to go by the alias “Josh DragonsFlame”.
Seeing the town was dealing with pressing issues of monster attacks and crime, Josh enlisted in the local militia, while beginning to explore Termina as an adventurer on the side. Josh began to gain a reputation in Termina as one of its protectors, and eventually rose to the rank of Guard Captain as the years went by. He began to take companions of his own, including a dog by the name of Buddy who he had nursed back to health after an attack by monsters, and a horse bred for war that was considered a failure and marked for death before Josh rescued and took them in, naming the foal Cabuck. But when a large monster attacked the town, Josh was beaten to the punch by a woman named Selene, who became the town’s celebrated champion. It became evident soon after that all he had done was forgotten in a flash, and it was like he wasn’t even there. While bitter at first, the thing that prompted him to action was the realization that with people beginning to take up arms in their champion’s name, Josh’s protection was no longer needed. The town he had stayed in to protect had finally learned to protect itself.
Seeing that his mission was finished, Josh resigned from his position and packed his things, making his way back to Labrynna after years away. Accompanying him was Buddy, Cabuck and a woman that had become his lover after saving his life. The farming village he had called home had become a base for the group of monsters that had razed it long ago, and Josh made it his new mission to liberate it and avenge his family once and for all. With the experience he had gained over the years, the veteran warrior would exact his revenge, driving out the monsters that had destroyed his home and finally giving his family a measure of peace.
Deciding not to remain in Labrynna, Josh and his companions would travel the world until they found themselves in the Kingdom of Hyrule. Satisfied that he had fulfilled his life’s goal, Josh would settle down in Ordon Village, starting a new life on a ranch of his own with his companions. Retiring as a swordsman, Josh looked to spend the rest of his life in peace and quiet as his parents had desired to long ago.
Two years had passed, and Josh’s ranch had begun to flourish. While he kept up his training out of force of habit, he had not seen battle since the day he had avenged his family and home. That was until the events of the Starlight Festival, where Josh witnessed the slaughter conducted by the monsters, nearly losing his own fiance in the process. The loss of so many and his failure to protect those he cherished gave him pause. He realized soon after that his mission wasn’t finished. Hyrule needed him, as did those that he wished to protect. He enlisted with Hyrule’s military, pledging himself in service of the Royal Family and taking on his old alias once more.
While quick to regain his footing as a swordsman, Josh was not used to taking orders, being more accustomed to following his own intuition and devising tactics on his own without consulting a commanding officer. This led to Josh constantly finding himself at odds with his commanding officers, and holding him back in rank. Despite this, he played a pivotal role in many battles to come, and his decisions would save many lives, including a particular battle within Zora’s Domain. Unfortunately, while his goal had been to become a Knight so he could support his desires as well as still spend time at home, his fiance was not there to see his dream come true as she was struck down in a later monster attack on Ordon. Fraught with grief, Josh decided he had nothing left to lose when the monsters attacked Kakariko Village. When his commanding officer fled the battle and nobody was willing to take the blame for being in command of a losing battle, Josh took command of the Army of Hyrule, devising tactics and boosting morale to lead them to victory. In the closing moments of the battle, Josh came face to face with the monster that had struck his fiance down, and to wipe them out he chose to detonate his own Bomb Bag, hoping to take the monster down even if it meant sacrificing his own life. Something he was content to do now that he had lost his reason to keep going.
Josh narrowly survived the explosion thanks to some untimely aid, but was arrested once he recovered from his injuries due to the extremely insubordinate nature of his actions. After an appeal from several witnesses, the Royal Family decided that instead of punishment, Josh would be awarded for his heroics with the title of Knight of Hyrule, a rare feat for someone of his rank. While it was a bittersweet victory, Josh took the mantle with pride, returning to his given name of Josh Dragelion in the process as a show of fealty to the Royal Family. It was here that Josh realized that his mission would not end until Hyrule was safe for good. He needed to continue to grow stronger to meet what came next.
Josh Dragelion had accepted that he was no hero of destiny a long time ago. He had made peace with this fact in the years since he had left Termina. And yet, it was in his expedition to the Forest Temple that the gods chose to lend him their favor. And task him with something that seemed impossible. A mission to end the war and save Hyrule from what would soon threaten its very existence.
