Jaden is socially awkward until the moment he finds something he can focus on. He is detail-oriented, and has a near-obsession with ensuring that everything of his is organized. He likes to be busy, and it isn’t long after he’s finished one thing that he’s onto another. Jaden goes out of his way to help anyone and everyone that he can, even if it can get him into trouble. Perhaps it’s his own experiences with being downtrodden and discarded by a society rife with people who care nothing for the less fortunate that led him to be this way? Though he’s generally smart enough to only take what action he can, sometimes Jaden’s passions get the best of him and he can act recklessly, and with a stubborn will at that. When he commits to something, he commits wholeheartedly.
What brings Jaden out of his shell is his scholarly passions. The man hyperfixates like crazy when a subject he's invested in comes up, and he can talk on it for hours if you let him.
Having a strong connection to his family and to Laurel, Jaden’s friendly demeanor can give way to extreme action if they are threatened. While not inherently violent by nature, Jaden’s hands are not entirely clean and he will not hesitate to dirty them if the need arises.
[attr="class","section"]history
Jaden’s mother didn’t like to talk much about his parentage. And for good reason. Born to a rather important figure for a father, Jaden and his older brother Kaiden seemed destined for the high life. At least, until his father decided to deal with the problem of having an affair and wanting to replace his wife by… Having his wife killed.
Which considering I mentioned “Jaden’s mother didn’t like to talk about his parentage much”, you can probably guess that didn’t go well either. Catching wind of the plot, and that he intended on offing Jaden as well out of a paranoia-laden fear that he wasn’t actually his child, the mother took the children and disappeared into the night.
Of course, Jaden doesn’t know any of this. He was far too young to remember caviar dreams or any semblance of “the good life”. Jaden and Kaiden grew up sleeping on the only bed in a two-room apartment in the slums of Hyrule City with a rat problem as his mother struggled to make ends meet and provide for two children through every odd job she could find. When his brother was somewhat old enough, he started working as well. Got into the mercenary business with his own little trope, fighting monsters and bandits alike, which he was actually quite good at. Which also meant while his brother traveled often and he didn’t always see him, Jaden’s mom could actually sleep in a bed of her own. As Jaden got older, he did his best to help provide for them as well, though while he had a gift for magic and a deep interest in it, it could only help so much when he had no proper training. Still, he would self train and use what he could to make a little scratch on the side.
Of course, his brother was still ultimately the breadwinner. But no matter how much he made, they still seemed to only make enough to make ends meet. Was he not making enough even with how dangerous the jobs were getting? Especially when the Shadow War began, and people all through Hyrule were desperate for as many capable swords as they could get.
Jaden meanwhile, ramped up his self training. Even took up a few sword lessons with a homeless guy in exchange for a share of food. Because with war on their doorstep, and the city having been subjected to a massacre once already, he needed to be strong enough to protect his mother if it came to it.
Finally, the war came to an end. The world was safe, for now, but Jaden kept training alongside any jobs he could find. But some time later, Kaiden returned home. And the question was finally asked. For someone renowned as “The Blade Breaker” who had once been invited personally to join the military, where was all the money going? Kaiden certainly hadn’t spent it on himself, they could tell just looking at him.
That answer came not from Kaiden, but instead later when Jaden received a letter from the heralded University of Magic. Someone had written an application for him, and it had been accepted. With the tuition already paid. As it turned out — Kaiden, the sneaky blighter, had been secretly corresponding with their mother to put money aside to send Jaden to a decent school. Not just any school, but the one Jaden had gazed at in wonder from a distance, over and over again. While Jaden had always been interested in studying magic to one day be able to use it to help others and help his mom, he hadn’t thought of proper education as a possibility with their financial situation. But thanks to his family’s efforts, he had an opportunity to live out that dream. And to finally be able to one day provide for his family as well, another dream of his.
This also came with another bit of news. Their mother had met someone new. They had been together in secret for some time, but finally decided to come out about it to her children. This man, some military knight called Tethras, had also been helping put money towards Jaden’s education, and was now offering his home in Kakariko to the family. Ensuring their mother wouldn’t have to worry about having a place to stay anymore. Kaiden had also decided to enlist with Hyrule’s military, citing his reasons being the efforts of the soldiers to save Hyrule, as well as the consistent pay. However, Jaden had a feeling it was also partly to keep an eye on Jaden.
With that Jaden said goodbye to his family and set out for the University Of Magic to fulfill his dreams. There, he took to lessons like a fish to water, burying his nose in books and putting his all into everything he did. There, he also met Laurel during his first year, who in time became his sweetheart. Now in his second year at the university, Jaden continues to work as hard as he can. He doesn’t quite know what the future holds, but he intends to put all that he has into whatever he sets his mind to.
