Making his home in the Sacred Grove, Josh grew up fascinated by monsters. He read books about Hyrule's wildlife when not occupied by odd jobs. His strength and dexterity made him popular among the children of the forest, almost always playing the role of commanding officer in the Kokiri's pretend military.

As he spent more and more time with those he was influencing, he discovered his true prowess was fighting from the saddle. Whether with a shortsword or with a slingshot, his prowess in defending the Sacred Grove from fictitious threats was very real. Even when astride Waffles, a donkey he believes to be the swiftest stallion in the world, his accuracy was second to none, frequently getting perfect scores on shooting galleries. Loving the wind in his face, he was one to mount up even for relatively short trips. The children he played with relished every chance they had to ride with him, zooming through the woods.

As the facade continued, the child bringing home increasing numbers of job postings on behalf of his "parents" and turning in bounties on their behalf, He still had a fascination with monsters, and his skill in the saddle was growing with every "battle".

Why not merge his love of both?

When he presented the idea of bringing exotic monsters into the woods, Josh's direct superior ridiculed him. Not feeling welcome in the woods, he took Waffles and left his previous life behind. Now, he wanders from stable to stable in Hyrule, helping her citizens when he can under the guise of family that only exists in his imagination. One to follow monster rumors, he never gave up his dream to tame and ride monsters. As fast as Waffles was, there were plenty of monsters out there that could run far faster. His dream of taming a Lightning Gleeok yearling burned hot in his heart. No one he had heard of had managed to tame, let alone ride, even a young Gleeok, and he wanted to be the first.

Though Josh does not know it yet, his riding prowess and the swiftness of his mount come naturally due to his passive Farore magic, making him feel light to any monster he rides. If he were to actively hone his magic, he could do things in the saddle almost no one else in Hyrule would be capable of...
