In the days before the 100 Year War, the world had known peace. Avatar Roku kept the balance between all four nations. In a time filled with technological discoveries, spiritual upheaval, nationalistic expansion, and tense diplomatic issues, his actions began the foundation of peace, that was said to last for generations to come.
And yet, peace is fragile.
It has been only one year since Avatar Roku reportedly vanished while attempting to save his island home from a volcanic eruption. Without his firm guidance, long-lasting treaties are being called into question, and tensions are rising.
And this is where you begin. Exceptional individuals in one way or another will make their mark on the world.
For more detailed information on what the culture of each nation is like, feel free to research! For more accurate depictions within the current time, Each one will be briefly described below!
{ The Fire Nation...} In this Era, The Fire Nation is generally stable and united, as compared to its past. Major internal conflicts haven't arisen in decades, and Sozin's ascension to Fire Lord was uncontested. Such a united force has become a powerhouse of knowledge and technological progress. However, materials are scarce, and political conflicts over resources with the Earth Kingdom have resulted in Sozin using these conflicts to stoke anti-Earth Kingdom sentiment.
Despite politics, the Fire Nation's scholars attempt open relations with everyone and share technology openly. Such results have spawned many of the younger Fire Nation nobles seeking enlightenment, following the Air Nomad's principles. The Nomads have even gone so far as to attempt to build The Fire & Air Center of Learning. A small rebel faction of Nomads called the Guiding Wind, however, has stalled production of the building almost forever by now. The military itself has guarded the construction site for a good many years, a move praised by the people who question the Guiding Wind's motives.
All is not as simple as it seems, however. Princess Zeisan, Fire Lord Sozin's sister, has declared her intent to marry the leader of the Guiding Wind, a monk named Khandro, abandoning all her titles. The Fire Lord has done much to enforce his hold on the throne, including instating the Dragon Hunts, but many difficulties lay ahead and his sister's actions will eventually weaken his hold on power. Without the Avatar, however... opportunities for expansion await.

{ The Earth Kingdom...} In this Era, the Earth Kingdom states have become increasingly isolationist. While Avatar Kyoshi had previously helped shape the constitution and was embraced by the Earth Sages, powerful political and spiritual figures, they weakened over time and began to embrace their roles as advisors and scholars, to assist the poorest among them. However, after daring to speak out against Earth King Jialun for changing the constitution, their order mysteriously vanished all in one night.
The people suffer, the governers of various Earth Kingdom states are seemingly able to rule without interference, and corruption runs rampant while others unwilling to play along with the Earth King's games suffer. Constant disputes between the Northern Water Tribes over local fishing and trade routes have resulted in incredible tension. A tsunami claimed entire villages, and the Earth Kingdom fully believes it was the Water Tribes' fault, and heavy taxes are imposed on any Water Tribe merchandise.
The addition of Fire Nation colonists claiming many islands after volcanic eruptions destroyed their homes has left the people of the Earth Kingdom feeling intense pressure from all their neighbors and have grown spiteful of outsiders. The Air Nomads that still attempt to keep the peace in the area without Roku's presence struggle in the face of growing hate.

{ The Water Tribes...} In this Era, the Water Tribes are struggling to find their place in this growing, changing world. The Spirits at the poles grow agitated and aggressive, many blaming the intense industrialization happening all over. Despite many ideas on how to progress, they all agree the world is changing, and not necessarily for the better.
The Northern Water Tribe's chieftain, Skiri, believes the other nations have taken enough from the tribes, as foreigners patrol waters without care and ignore the spirits. Aggression and force is the only thing the other nations understand, and when a natural tsunami decimated their navy during a conflict with the Earth Kingdom about shipping routes, they believed an earthquake caused by earthbenders to be the cause and grew even more defensive. Smugglers to evade the Earth Kingdom's high taxes are incredibly common.
Meanwhile, in the Southern Water Tribe, Qanitt their chieftain intends to secure political ties through peaceful means and cooperation. They foresee the spirit's agitation as a warning to gather allies before it is too late, taking advantage of the tribes' resources and crafts. Despite this internal difference, the two tribes have always put forward a united front on the international stage, but without the Avatar, tensions build and their internal disagreements can no longer be put aside to be handled another time.

{ The Air Nomads...} In this Era, the Air Nomads are incredibly influential, and their teachings have spread far and wide. Thanks in part to direct support from political families in the Fire Nation, and calls in the past from Avatar Roku to help assist with the world's affairs, as he trusted the Nomads greatly. However, not all within the Nomads are so comfortable with this intense worldly interference.
The Guiding Wind is a small order led by monk Khandro, not recognized by any of the Four Temples, but has made a name for themselves regardless. They believe in autonomy over their physical and spiritual life, and such philosophy directly conflicts with the controlling power of the societal elite in many other nations. To this end, Khandro has agreed to marry Princess Zeisan of the Fire Nation who is forsaking all her titles, against the recommendation of most of his advisors.
The rest of the Nomads believe that they have to embrace those with worldly prosperity to help those who do not, as the only way to reject them would be to forgo assisting other nations entirely, as such actions require working with those who refuse to cede power or wealth. However, with Avatar Roku gone, many nomads still dedicated to assisting the other nations are finding their presence to be more stressful than before, or even unwanted. As petty conflicts grow more and more by the day, the Guiding Wind's philosophy appeals to more by the day.
