“H-hey! Where are you going?”
Although the shout was genuinely worried, the Zora beggar did not at all seem surprised when the albino Zora bolted out of the area with his fins between his legs. In fact, she seemed to expect it to some degree. For someone who regarded the whole ordeal as just a trip, the albino was an utter coward. Even Kaysa could sense how panicked the albino was by just a simple wound. A wound that was actually caused by himself waltzing nonchalantly into what was obviously a room full of traps. He did not even stop to think about the words “Step as ‘a friend’, and enter” and and arrow above it so blatantly displayed on the floor. Or if he did, he did not make his thoughts known, and thus Kaysa could not help him figure things out.
Well, it was the albino’s loss.
Nevertheless, he did confirm something useful. Judging from his reaction on the words written beneath the statues, both the Ancient Hylian and the Ancient Zoran characters disclosed the same thing. This was enough. The only reason that awful scholar was needed was to translate the ancient Hylian and made sure it did not contradict what was written on the Ancient Zoran characters. The truth was that the Zora beggar could read Ancient Zoran just fine, courtesy of the insistence of her late grandfather. Wow. That old geezer was actually useful.
Now, she only hoped the albino knew which way left or right. Vibrations would be funny to seek in an underground cave in a desert where each sand particle moved, and the only sound he would hear was his own footsteps. Wind? The entrance was covered expertly. There might be another exit but, well…hope he found it first before he clumsily sprung another trap, or before something worse found him. There’s a vast difference between moving at night in the open and moving in pitch black darkness in an underground cave…. Not that Kaysa cared anymore. The other zora wasn't part of her problem. Maybe she’d meet more of the kidnapped victims in the way forward; people less likely to stab her in the back.
And now, Kaysa tiptoed back towards the tiled room, torch in hand. “Step as ‘a friend’, and enter.” She had had a hunch on what to do, considering the way the tiles were laid out and that the trap was not sprung until several tiles had been pressed down. Now those tiles were back on the place, as if restarting. And if Kaysa remembered correctly, it had the straight shape of a particular character….
Time to test theories.
Ready to drop and crawl back should the trap be activated again, Kaysa made her first step.
One… the tile sank and stayed in place. No trap was sprung.
Good.
She advanced to the next, in a straight line. Two… It stayed down.
The third was in a straight line too. Still no traps. Three tiles pressed down, in a straight line.
Should she continued, the fourth one would be the one which activated the traps and sent the albino scurrying out like small herrings. She would not touch that. The bigger question was, should she had it in Ancient Hylian or Ancient Zoran?
She paused, but not for long. For no particular reason Kaysa chose the Ancient Zoran, the tile to the left.
Lightly, she pressed the tile with the tip of her toes.
It went down a little.
She shifted more weight on that one leg, ready to bolt away with her other leg should anything happened. The tile sank deeper.
Nothing happened.
She pushed more, slowly but surely bringing the tile down with all her weight. She could not afford the be careless. It could be that the trap would be activated once a tile had been fully pushed down. It could also be-

Faintly but surely, the tile clicked and stayed in place.
Kaysa smiled.
It was so easy. So simple, if one but only asked and tried. Step as ‘a friend’ …of course.
Now all that left was to complete the character for ‘a friend’ on the tiled floors. With the arrow on the first tile pointing at the entrance and the gilded gold door right across it was so obvious. The entrance was the up direction. The door was down. All it needed was to imagine the tiles as dots and step on them one by one to connect those dots to make the character of ‘a friend’. Step as ‘a friend’, and enter.
And now, the enter part.
Sure enough, the gilded golden door opened once the last tile was pressed down. Undaunted, Kaysa entered the door.
