Things had been busy for the last few months. Ordon Village had been almost destroyed by the Twilight Realm’s forces when the Curtain struck the entire Ordona province. While they were able to beat it back, the damage had been done. By the urging of Lady Ursula von Brandt, Josh had pursued a role where he could best aid the village, especially in its time of need. So it was that he had been assigned to head the new military outpost in Ordon Village, while still holding a Knight’s duties. Between knight assignments, his responsibility was to coordinate Ordon’s defensive measures and ensure that the guards assigned to the village were properly trained, stocked and had proper strategies ready should the village be attacked. It hadn’t been easy. Hyrule’s best soldiers had to remain near the city most of the time in order to fight on the front lines against the Twili’s forces. That meant that those who were deemed suitable to be sent to Ordon Village weren’t always top quality units. While Ordon was a valuable source of produce for Hyrule, they were just stretched too thin and there were bigger priorities. And most of the men sent were, quite frankly, green. Most of them had enlisted after the war had already started. Some wanted the fame and glory that they saw Hyrule’s Knights attaining after their newest addition had won the Battle of Eldin. Others had real, genuine pride in their country and wished to protect it and its people. Either way, most of them were inexperienced. And that meant it was his job to whip them into shape on the double. So it was that the former Guard Captain would find himself in a similar role once again. Troops would report to Dragelion Ranch early in the morning to conduct training drills, with part of the ranch he had used as his own personal training yard now being used to train an entire unit. Taking tabs from his time spent training Selene, he had some of their training drills involve work around the ranch. Baling hay, herding livestock on horseback, the precision needed to properly water crops, it was a lot of work and the men were beginning to feel aches and pains in muscles they didn’t know they had. Josh couldn’t help but find humour in it. Many of these soldiers were city lads and ladies, most of whom had grown up with parents who sold goods or waited tables. Some had even come from wealthy families, and had hardly worked a day in their lives before enlisting. While they had all been subjected to training drills at the castle by now, you just couldn’t replicate the muscles, reflexes and instincts you honed by working the fields. And Sir Dragelion, or Captain Dragelion to them, was not a soft instructor by any means. He was hard, but fair. After working the fields and with the livestock, it was soon enough followed up by combat drills. The poor buggers were exhausted even after a break, but that was war for you. They needed to build up their endurance and stamina. They needed to learn to be ready for combat at anytime. And going from Ordon life to having to fight said life at a moment’s notice was exactly what these men were going to be dealing with during their time stationed here. Once their drills were over, they would swap out with their reserves and begin their patrols. And the process would begin again with the other half of the troops. It did mean less work for ranch-hands, but after the attack on the village, there was more work needed than they could keep up with. People trying to recuperate their losses from the attack, get back on track and rebuild. On his spare time, Josh had often gone out to help with the repair efforts himself. He hadn’t had much time for fishing or adventuring or any other hobbies, really. But now that the village was beginning to stabilise a bit more and his new patrol schedules and strategies for the troops were set in place, and the men were more suitable for duty compared to a few months ago, Josh had a bit more time on his hands and could afford to leave the village more often. He hadn’t left much, only to deliver reports to the castle and pay visits to a certain Princess a handful of times. But perhaps now he could deliver them more frequently. And visit more frequently than once or twice a month. One of those visits came today. He had just been inquiring in Hyrule Castle’s courtyard about the whereabouts of one Princess Selene when a crier would call something out, causing the men to line up in formation. “Make way! Make way for the return of His Highness, Prince Ehtolos Dynas Le Hyrule!” |
