Born the oldest son of Zora King Finlium Orcanth, Will grew up the Crown Prince of the Zora. Wide-eyed and curious, the Zora Prince loved to explore the Domain and its surroundings, meeting its people who all looked to him with friendly smiles and eyes hopeful for the future. Chosen to one day lead the Zora people, Will found himself applying himself well to studies of etiquette and learning about their people. In his view, it was the best way he could repay the kindness that their people had shown him. He found himself taking to the sword after a mild monster attack knocked down one of the Domain's statues. In his mind, if he was to be King, he needed to be able to protect his people.
Perhaps he was naïve, but he found himself able to enjoy life to the fullest and overall was a laid-back, well-meaning lad who just wanted to do good. Traits passed down from his father, a very laid back and casual Zora King who was the friendliest oaf you could meet. While not a perfect ruler, King Orcanth was fair and just, always looking out for the best interests of his people. He had traits that William considered admirable, and he sought to emulate him best he could.
Unfortunately, he was no politician. At least, not the shrewdest one in the court anyway. And that was what led to the downfall of his family.
It wasn't long after he arrived. The Deceiver, the Liar. The Usurper. Conniving, cunning and selfish, the man manipulated his way into the court and soon had many in his pocket. He charmed them with false promises and spread lies about His Majesty and his family. Heinous, despicable lies as the silver-tongued devil quickly turned the people and the courts against him. The big oaf had no idea what hit him when they arrived at his throne room. Forcing him and his family into exile, and putting that devil of a river Zora on the throne.
In the papers, they tried to call it a peaceful coup, without bloodshed. But just because no blood had been shed when the father and his son, barely a man at this point, were escorted out of the throne room and out of the Domain entirely... Didn't mean that it was without it. The lies carried great weight, and in trying to find a place to go, the father and son duo quickly became a target. They found no help wherever they went, only pain. They had been framed as monsters, deceivers who had done terrible things in the shadows and who deserved only death. And while Will doesn't know who ordered that final attack, he had reason to think that the new King Zora had decided to ensure that their lie could never be exposed.
The attack left both father and son greatly injured, with the father sacrificing himself so the son could live another day. After that day, Will was alone. At first, he had been confused. How could the people who had been so friendly to them for years, who they had done their best for, treat them like animals without a second thought? Continuing his study of the sword alone, Will would offer his services as a sellsword under cloak and dagger, his name vanishing into history as he disappeared. Even when the Usurper was himself dethroned, nobody thought to find the truth. Nobody came looking for him, and nobody was there to help him. In his mind, he began to see his people as liars themselves, who had faked their smiles and kindness because he was a Prince, with intention to gain later. Perhaps material reward, or to worm their way into the courts as the deceiver had. It didn't matter, he supposed. What mattered was that he had lost everything, and there was no going back now.
He became cold, distant, and untrusting of others. Sometimes he would do what seemed like the right thing, just an old habit he never quite broke. But he never let anyone get close.
All he could do now was find his place in a world that had forgotten him.
