"Yes!"

Marianne jubilant thoughts echoed as Klara dropped the Tear of Light to the spring. This is it! Their mission has been a success! Not to simply wait for the healing wave of light that always comes after such tribulations. In stories, this is the time when the heroes strike back, right?

...right?

The Tear molded into the water and disappeared. The light had been returned home, at last. And then... and then....

Nothing.

The eagle-owl body was hit by a ramming cuccoo while the Queen inside was processing her mind.

"Wait. That is all?! Oof-!"

Staying here is dangerous! Dragging her broken left wing on the ground, the eagle owl clumsily sprinted to the only other safe place she could think of -the spring! Owls cannot swim like ducks can, but they will at least float!

She successfully plunged herself into the cool water, paddling herself as best as she could away from the shore. To her relief, the Wild Cuccoos did not seem eager to dip into the water, instead clucking around the water's edge threateningly. Nor did the Shadow Beasts dared to plunge into the water. The spring, at least, seemed to repel them.

So, there was an injured eagle-owl floating on a sacred spring, besieged by cuccoos and shadow beasts. Above her, a magpie was circling. Things did not look good.

"Lady Klara..." came Marianne's thoughts, "You should return. No way I will be able to fly back to Castle Town like this...."

The eagle owl tried, and failed, to lift her left wing. Yet, her tone was as confident as a Queen of Hyrule should be.

"...You can leave me here. Most importantly, now we know the location of Ordonian Spring. We have to let the others know."

How could she survive? If even she had her chance? Marianne didn't know. Didn't really care either.

After all, her time had been long overdue.

Huh?

It seemed their journey was not yet done. While the water shimmered and shined with its new addition, it did not surpass the waters quite yet. What were they missing? Did the others have to be successful as well for it to do something besides shine again? Pheh, magic was always an arcane and complicated subject.

“Oh shush, you’re not being left behind. Even if we have to wait for the magic spring to kick in.” Klara replied, flapping her wings above the queen. The Cuccoos were smart, but Klara doubted they had long attention spans or long grasps of anger. So for them, they need only wait it out… The shadow beasts, however…

Twisting her head, Klara looked around for something to assist. Healing was no spell she knew, but she could at least try to dry the owl feathers once she was out… The question was how…

The magpie circled around the area until she found something: a branch, perhaps a little heavy for this body but it had to hold. Picking it up with her beak, she dove over towards the hylian and offered the other end down. “Out of the water first, your majesty. Birds have legs for a reason. So let’s use them.”

The eagle owl stared at the branch incredulously. "Birds also have wings for a reason, Lady Klara.... It will be like us going around using our hands instead of our feet...."

Which was to say, it would be very uncomfortable and very awkward, not to mention very slow. How many birds have been seen covering distances using only their legs? Except Ekdin Ostriches, perhaps. But eagle owls? Marianne could not even dream covering the distances they flew through on her birdy legs alone.

Clearly, Her Majesty would have preferred Klara to return with the news, leaving herself to her fate. But she also knew better than to argue. They really were quite alike, the Gerudo lady and the Hylian queen. They had an obstinate streak to their otherwise rational approach.

Reluctantly, the eagle owl bit the branch being offered. "Steer me to a safe shore. I shall... paddle...." She had no webs on her feet so maneuvering in this water was very hard. Not to mention that she was almost twice the size of Klara and ten times as heavy.....

At least no rocks were being thrown at them for now....

Demise’s wrath had nothing on the stubbornness of the two birds in the spring. The young woman seemed unwilling to let the size difference of these bodies stop her. Every flap of her wings to give a tug towards the shoreline away from the cuccos and the shadow beasts waiting for their prey. It was certainly a struggle, but she would not stop until they were to the shore.

“Sounds like it would simply be a new challenge for you to walk with a handstand. At least this will be easier than doing it in the sand.” A light teasing, perhaps. The sand was home, after all. While there was no muscle for pure strength, there was plenty for movement.

Once she got to a place to breathe, the Gerudo let go of the branch. “We can walk on our hands easier down the hill. The wetlands will bring us back towards the Faron woods and we’ll follow the edge until we’re in the village there.

"We’ll rest and then head back to castle town. You sent some others that way, right? Maybe they’ve gotten the spring there shining too.”

The eagle owl seemed... resigned. She did what she could to help herself move along the water's surface, her bird legs paddled uselessly as she let herself being pulled by the magpie. But she clearly did not do so with vigor. It would be better if all these efforts be used to fly back to Castle Town rather than helping this lost cause....

But the two birds luck had not run out yet, it seemed. The long minutes they spent on the spring made the cuccoos seemingly forgot their target of aggression. They strut around the shore and clucking, daring the encircling Shadow Beasts to step onto their turf. For their part the Shadow Beasts snarled and circled around the spring, waiting for their chance to pounce. The two birds arrived on a relatively empty shore opposite of where they first began.

And as the eagle owl slowly walked onto the sands, her feathers dripping wet, her left wing was clearly being dragged uselessly on the ground, limp and pitiful. Bones were broken, and no way she would be able to use that wing to fly. It was a miracle that the Hylian inside that bird was not screaming in pain, merely keeping her beak shut and focused. Such injuries could possible be healed faster with magic. But as they were now....

At least she attempted a feeble chuckle at the magpie's teasing, appreciating her company. "You are right. Maybe I can... roll downhill or something...."

And the red eyes which surveyed the barren land ahead was one of despair. Head back to the castle.... How? These bones would take time to heal. Weeks, by itself. And it was assuming that they could somehow kept it in place for it to heal properly and infection had not set in first.... Ugh. Whenever there was an expedition she always ended up as a burden, didn't she? Even way back then when she first met that-

"Yes. Let us... try to head back...." How could she dispute the Gerudo when she spoke with such conviction? She took one step, and then the next, covering as much distance as her small birdy legs could allow. Even if it would take months.... Would they still do it? One of the Shadow Beasts howled somewhere on the other side of the spring. But perhaps they could sneak away from this crowded spring undetected, hiding under bushes.....

"It seems... You will be stuck with this useless me for a while," she said, unable to hold back the guilty feeling inside of her, "I am really, really sorry, Lady Klara..."

“I never pegged you for a pessimist.” To leave her companion behind, leave her injured in enemy territory… Their situation had been dire, but not enough for her to entertain the idea. There were no losses to cut here. Those matters aside, the sheer political fallout that would stem if something happened to Marianne if Klara willingly left her here…

As they walked, Klara combed through her brain. Magic seemed to be unstable - or was it just their ability to use it? They were in new bodies and had new senses, so perhaps magic was simply something different. Klara could still feel the water from her companion and the mana inside her; it was just a matter of how…

Klara hopped over in front of her companion once she felt they were far enough to not draw too much attention. “Pardon me. I’m going to try something,” The magpie bounced and let the flap of her wings bring her into the air - then a distance away from the owl. She dove down towards her before using her wings to stop like a parachute, the feathers flapping up like a conductor's hands. Upon the owls feathers, the water would rise and evaporate; the magic almost looked like rain in reverse.

“Gods bless.”

“Unless you injured yourself on purpose, then you’re quite alright.” Promised the Gerudo, stepping back in time with her companion. “Lift your wing as much as possible. If it’s going to drag, it will only create more damage.” Should Marianne follow her request, the young woman would wiggle under the wing to help support it. It might have been uncomfortable to hold the weight and uncomfortable to bounce it with the magpies steps - but it would be better than risking extraneous damage to the wing.

“If my estimates are right, we should return by sunrise.” It was hard to account for their shortened legs, not knowing how far they could make it in comparison to their human forms… But she tried to double the time as an estimate. “Assuming we go at about a walking pace and make minimal stops... Perhaps you can tell me that story, to pass the time."

"It has kept me alive so far," replied the eagle owl plainly, not objecting at being labeled like that. Pessimist... realist... being too careful... Whatever it was, her tendency to predict things as worse than they actually were had been key of several of her successes so far. And averted some unfortunate... 'accident' by her enemies in the court. However, it was combined with her tendency to keep going no matter what which made such mindset feasible.

And she would keep going, make no mistake. It was only that in her mind Klara would better serve them by flying ahead and reporting what they found, perhaps even returning with aid soon. In her state now she was a burden to them both. And her inability to fly jeopardize both their speed and their safety. In her mind, at least, it was the logical thing to do.

As to her own safety... plans had been made in advance should The Queen suddenly perished, at least. Marianne doubted anyone would really care who sat on the throne provided he or she did their job well. She would be missed for her organizational skills, perhaps. But on personal level? No. No one would mourn her on personal level.

'Well now,' said the little voice in her head, 'You know that is not wholly true.'

'...I am doing my duty.'

The water on her feathers evaporated, thanks to the magpie. The eagle owl nodded in gratitude, but also was clearly taken aback at her words. Injuring herself on purpose? Why in Hylia would she be accused such and why would she do such thing? A lesser person might have retorted to that, but not Marianne. She focused on what she needed to do instead, even though, because their minds were more or less connected through the mark, Klara would be able to feel a dark cloud passing in The Queen's mind. Something which went away as soon as it appeared.

"I... try...." she replied, trying to lift that uselessly limp wing of hers. It looked lame and uncomfortable -the part where the bone broke was dangling down in awkward manner. "But it is hard to keep it lifted at all times...." Not to mention very painful, but she tried her best not to let Klara knew. If she had an actual hand, she would be able to create a sling like she had done in countless injuries before. But with feather in her fingers and barely usable talons....

Still, she would try her best to honor her request, despite the pain. "A... story....?" projected her mind as they took several steps away from the spring. Even her mind was gasping. But so far, as long as no Shadow Beasts or cuccoos noticing the slinking birds.... "Oh. The story about that Hylia Spell, right...?" Or did she mean another? The eagle owl let out a few hoots in agony. "It was... really quite extraordinary, Lady Klara.... It started-"

But at that time, a most dreaded sound was heard from the other side. A Shadow Beast howled. Followed by another. And another. And then heavy footsteps coming towards them telling the two birds that, yes, the Shadow Beasts were coming over towards them.

Marianne did not even turn around, although she had liked doing so, being an owl with flexible neck.

"I... think you really should escape while you can, Lady Klara...."

Yet, there was another set of footsteps coming towards them. This one were lighter, softer.

And they came from the opposite direction.

Suddenly, the water in the spring surged violently, spilling out from its place in a torrent of water to their left and right at the same time. No sooner had the water settled did it change into a solid wall of ice, blocking the Shadow Beasts path and forced them to a long detour! The sound of the Beasts' bodies crashing against the suddenly appearing walls echoed across the place, added by the panic clucking of the cuccoos.

And a shadow. Purple haired. Sharp face. Red eyes. A Twili in white official-looking garb sprinted towards their position, seemingly appearing out of nowhere. Wordlessly he picked up the pitiful eagle owl on the sands and, despite the eagle owl's furious protests by flapping her healthy wings and shrieking -which the Twili would not be able to understand anyway- kept it tucked under his arm as he ran back whence he came.

"Ya too," he said, his sharp eyes looking at the magpie circling above. From behind them, the Shadow Beasts roared.

The way he moved across the landscape made it clear that he had been here before. Or at least he had known this area for quite some time to actually know where he was going. Twice he stopped and crouched near a thick bush just in time to let some Shadow Beasts walked past. Twice he suddenly made a sharp turn near a hill and went back the other side, and as they ran they could see the Shadow Beasts pursuing them ran to the top of the hill instead. He passed a small river but did not cross it, instead doubling back and hide behind some rocks. Some of their pursuers crossed the river instead, and were left fumbling in the field beyond while the Twili sneakily went downstream to cross at another part instead.

By this time, even Marianne knew to keep her beak silent.

Finally, the twili ran to the top of a hill, only to swing back down to a natural cave nestled near the top of said hill. A place well protected and well-suited to see the surroundings. There was a ring of stones encircling some burnt woods there, as well as various-sized water jars with Gerudo symbols on them and another pile of dried woods. Some fish bones were swept to the corner.

It seemed this Twili had used this hideout for quite some time.

Rather roughly, she put the eagle owl down near the circle of stones. The eagle owl rolled ungracefully, writhing in pain.

"Ya ain't simple birds, ain't ya?" he said, unfastening his sword and let it lean against the wall, near where he plopped down to sit. "Been watching that spring for some time. Ya did a thing to make it shine like that."

He was... a little rough around the edges, but eminently quite polite. His demeanor would remind a noble of a long lost house or a loser of a royal power struggle -someone who was once quite sophisticated but which circumstances had forced him to eke out a living through a harsh and unforgiving reality. His red eyes shifted from the eagle owl to the magpie, his face wary but quite relaxed.

Ah, it seemed they would not get a break... Perhaps one of them was cursed. Klara could hear the steps coming towards them from the humanoid form and the Shadow Beasts, but while the ideal was to fly away - she still was not going to leave Marianne despite the rather peculiar insistence.

What she would do was follow the rebel despite the distrust that the sight of Twili stirred within her. There was little she could do in terms of fighting back or even attempting to rescue her partner. Both of them were at a disadvantage; with these bodies, Mariannes magic being interfered with, and Klaras lack of experience with her own from the desertscape.

Even as the man questioned them, she did not answer. How could she? So the Magpie just stared him down and settled down beside the injured owl. He may have stolen the Gerudos' supplies and items, but he was a Twili in official gear. Not a single rumor of a rebel group meant no trust.

For now, he would just have to handle a magpie giving a rather sharp stare into his forehead.

The laid-back Twili chuckled. "Yeah, that settles it. Don't stare at me too long, though. Stares are JIIInxes, ya know~"

At that moment the eagle owl let out another painful hoot, which shifted the Twili's attention towards her.

"Oh whoa. That's a messed up wing ya got there." The eagle owl stared at him angrily, "What? Yes I might have made it worse but spare me some! Saving your feathery ass from those Shadow Beasts ain't an easy task, ya know."

Chuckling, the Twili went to the back of the cave, returning with one of the water-filled vase of Gerudo design.

"This Twili is... okay...." came Marianne's thoughts to Klara. Although she would notice that there was a swirling of emotions behind her mind.

"And maybe I can do something about it." Removing his gloves, The Twili put the vase beside the injured bird, and dip his hands into the water.

"Don't move too much, hm?" said The Twili, now sitting cross legged and gently picked the eagle owl on his lap. "This won't be very nice to ya."

The eagle owl let out a determined hoot, and did not move. The Twili chuckled as he carefully lifted the uselessly limp left wing.

"Yer one brave bird. Been injured much, eh?" He pinched the tip of the wing and straighten it. Immediately, the bent shape one third to the distal of the wing tip was duly obvious. The Twili's eyes widened.

"Oh I see."

The eagle owl squirmed. But considering the pain of having broken bones manipulated, it was a commendable effort she only did just that.

And without words, without warning, he gently but firmly pulled the wing and aligned the bones together before keeping them in place with his glowing left hand. One. Two. Three places. Even with healing magic quickly in place, the eagle owl buckled down. It was so painful she bit the Twili clothes, of which he paid no mind.

"There. Wait a few minutes while yer bones are healed." With his two hands now glowing and holding the wing in place, all that was left was to wait as the healing waters took effect. The eagle owl was panting heavily.

"So tell me," he continued, turning his head towards the magpie. "I am in Hyrule, yeah? Awfully dry and sand-ful for the supposed Promised Land, but this is Hyrule, yeah? Raise your right wing if it is true, birdie. Left wing if it ain't."

Charming. Or at least, that was what he was trying to be. But there were a variety of things that did not exactly rule in his favor, and that attempt was one of them. And while his assistance to Mariannes broken wing was certainly a notch in his favor… To trust him simply because of one or two acts of goodwill on helping two interesting animals was not enough to grant him trust status.

Which was why Klara was bewildered that Marianne so easily decided that he was okay. This entire situation… It felt wrong. Marianne, the Queen of Hyrule who acted far too comfortable in the curtain, had been injured in her care - Diplomatic Issue #1 - and brought behind enemy lines - diplomatic Issue #2… And then insistent on pushing her away, to leave the injured Queen be - diplomatic issue #3. Then suddenly a Twili decided to help them? It made the young woman's stomach churn with the possibilities.

“As soon as your wing is healed, we’re leaving.”

Perhaps it was in bad taste to say something so flatly and assertively to the ruler of a neighboring kingdom. But the warning bells ringing in Klara’s head were too pressing to ignore. So for now, she would stare firmly at the Twili regardless of his protests or hsi questions. No wing would be raised to answer him. No glare averted. All the young Gerudo would do would be to hop towards the owls now healing wing.

A pause. For a moment, Marianne did not immediately reply -an oddity for her. Her bones being set up might have something to do with that. But....

And perhaps she realized that their mind link let a few thoughts and feelings not to be shared leaked, for the next moment she shut off her mind completely. The vague noises which always accompanied two people with their mind linked suddenly vanished. She had exerted greater control on her mind.

But what could be gleamed before her mind completely retreated was rather... peculiar....

It was almost as if she did not want to leave.

"... Yes," came her response at last, "Of course. We'll do that."

"No, then?" The Twili raised his eyebrows, but apparently was not really bothered by the magpie's incessant gaze, taking it in stride in his usual carefree manner instead, "Well, whatever suits ya. What about ya, eagle-owl-person?"

For a few seconds the eagle owl also stared at him in silence. But finally, she lifted her right wing very slowly.

The Twili grinned. "Not that I am surprised but.... By the Twilight. Hyrule, eh? To think she condemned us to years of slavery just to see these... these... sands...."

There was a hint of anger behind that nonchalant grin of his, which was picked up by the eagle owl. Slowly, her wing went down.

"Who leads Hyrule?" the Twili continued, apparently eager for more information, "There's a strong kingdom in Hyrule, yea? You came from that kingdom, no? Is it a King? a Queen? Maybe that Redwing guy?"

And now it was the eagle owl's turn to stare in silence. The Twili waved his hand. "Yeah yeah. Ain't gonna blame ya. I'd do the same.

Just... whoever it is on the throne, birdie, warn 'em that this... this... blight is not caused by Twili. Well, not all Twili yea. Only those loyal to that damned Raalk. There are many Twili out there who want nothing to do with yer lands. At all. We can be allies, ya know? Kill this accursed Usurper together and we promise ya, we'll go back the way we came. Please tell yer ruler this, 'kay? So that they don't execute any Twili they come across. Tell 'em this, please."

And the Twili's chest puffed out slightly.

"And should they ask, ya get this from Polemarchos Chiaro Duscuro, second-in-command to Prince Zhong of The Rebellion and former Royal Knight to Queen Misteria, the Last of the Twili Firstborns. We are all enemies of Raalk the Usurper, man responsible for this shit."

Certainly, the earlier impression of how he seemed to be a man of social standing before his fall from grace was strengthened. The eagle owl simply stared at him in silence, before carefully flapping her wings. Both of them.

Her wing still looked ruffled, but at least it was not misshapen anymore. And the bones held taut. The eagle owl was ready.

As if confirming his plea, the eagle owl hooted once.

"Yea. Time to go, birdie," the Twili said, lifting himself up, "Ain't gonna loiter around here either if I can fly like ya. Knew yer one of 'em Sacred Beasts the moment I saw ya."

He gestured towards the entrance of the cave. Towards the broad, open, twilit sky. On the furthest horizon there seemed to be a gush of purple flickering in the distance, before disappearing into the shadowy skies.

The Twili furrowed his eyebrows.

"Careful on yer way, yea?"

The magpie closed her eyes, taking a breath. Perhaps it was a piece of unimportant information, where exactly they were, but to give them anything felt unwise. It seemed that the Queen would at least refuse to answer his second question, this time more pressing. The less information they had, especially about their leadership, the better. Klara just hoped the benefit of the doubt on this matter may pay off.

Again, he would babble on. But while Klara listened, she would give him little attention. He could say whatever he wanted to two birds… but he had no right to be believed. Not in times of war. So Klara would wait, and wait, until Marianne flapped her wings again and rose into the sky.

With that signal in place, Klara would hurry out of the horizon with little care for formalities or politeness to the Twili. The churn in her chest… Perhaps it was just because they escaped the hands of a Twili. Perhaps it was that they were returning home after such a journey. But no matter the reasons, the young woman would stay silent for the rest of the flight.

There was too much to think about… and with wings instead of legs, she would take all the time flight would offer for it.

It turned out, there was still time left for some surprises. As the birds were about to fly out, the eagle owl swerved and landed on the Twili's right shoulder. The Twili's eyes widened.

"Oh?"

Firmly, but only as strong as her legs could muster, the eagle owl stomped her left talons on his shoulder once.

Then she flew to his left shoulder and stomped her foot again. Twice this time.

And lastly she perched atop his head. The Twili, a little surprised, let her be. And she proceeded to stomp on his forehead, three times now, before hooting once and swiftly flew out of the cave, leaving the Twili alone.

The Twili, stunned, slowly moved a hand to his forehead, at the place where the eagle owl stomped him before. A grin slowly grew on his lips.

"Well I'll be.... Never thought benedictio militis is also a thing here.... Funny little birds...."

For a moment, his face grew pensive. The sharp eyes softened, as he remembered a memory from a time long gone. A memory he was ambivalent about.

"When was it.... Ah, yea. My knighting ceremony, eh? That Queen was the last one....."

He exhaled, and presently shook his head. "Well, I am sure her soul is out there suffering somewhere. Good riddance...." He moved to the back of the cave, notching the spring's place on a crude map he had carved in a hidden corner, "Now, where to... where to...."

The eagle owl, also, was silent for a long time. Perhaps it was understandable. Minutes ago she believed she would have to walk all the way back to Hyrule Castlle Town. And then suddenly a healer came out of nowhere, and a Twili at that. And now she was able to fly again. She might feel that she should get out while her luck still held on.

Once they were flying with Mount Faloraa besides her, however, the Queen opened up conversation.

"Do you think we will be able to return back to our original form once we get out of Twilight Curtain?" she inquired.

When the owl turned back, Klara watched them both. The magpie stared at the Twili as he was put through an owls accolade before they flew off. It seemed they both took the time to review all they had been through. With both of them having wings and the woods of Faron not too far off, they should be out of the curtain here soon. A more direct path, this time.

“Who’s to say.”

Of course there was a laundry list of questions that came with the curtain. And even more with the Twili. The young woman looked back at the mountains slowly growing smaller behind them. What else had the Twili stolen, destroyed, and defaced? All her efforts. She mourned all that was and all that would be corrupted beneath their curtain… Just how far could their grip reach? And how much could they save from it?
