HISTORY
A tragedy withheld.
The first born son of a high ranking civil servant, Nikhil had been born with high expectations. And with rumors of war with the light realm on the back of everyone's tongues, they grew steadily higher. He was to be smart, strong, and steady in every situation. An enforced prodigy. From the time that he could speak, he was to be quiet; from when he could walk, he was to be still. A harsh education from minute one.
Harsh conditions may have strengthened his head, but it took a toll on his body. While his mind could grow, his muscles stubbornly refused to follow suit and it became clear that his nature would not paint him as a warrior. Desperate for a coin in the pile, his family hurried to have another child to compensate for what their first son lacked.
Nikhil’s siblings struggled. The circumstances still unkind - yet Nikhil would be a saving grace: blood first had been what they instilled to him, and by whatever they would pray to would he follow it. Answers snuck to his brother by notes and whispers on the wind, snacks hidden away in long sleeves and stacks of reading materials. While his brother struggled in the dark for his education, he shone center stage for answers slipped by and a strength unparalleled.
Together, the two were quite a pair. Two halves of a coin that knocked down situations as they came, their ability to almost read one another's mind bringing them to a point of near inspiration.
Good, however, could not last long.
As the war with the light realm began, things started to crumble between the two. Nikhil’s research is taken away and answers for why are never given. His brother was pulled into the front lines more and more until the two could not even see one another's faces in the hallways. The coin had been cut and the once inseparable children became puppets of their former selves.
One battle left his kin holding desperate to a final thread of life. The family pushed Nikhil desperately to save him, doing whatever means they could find to ensure his survival. But with the damnation of their eldests research, they found it: a risky attempt to combine the two. A family with broken morals shoving fragments of their dying golden child into the mind of the other. Both bound by chain and duty as they writhed - resistant to combine, resistant to torture the other… And finally, a success?
But it was not without its failures.
Nikhil’s body had not gotten any stronger for combat. His brother's personality did not take him over but sat beside him at the control center, a voice of a dead brother in his head for all hours of the day. For some time, it was considered a failure. Nikhil’s own instability and mourning leaving rooms in ruin and work left undone.
As done in their youth, the two brothers - now one - were met with an iron fist of discipline. An attempt to build them up left them to simply hide inward, the two desperate to survive before they could properly have a setting to work through the pain.
The family was finally satisfied. While physical strength was lacking, the two sons had amplified their magic capability. A scholar and a warrior to a master of magic in one. And with what they believed was the perfect son, they put him back to work. This time, utilizing his place at the princesses side as the divide began to grow. If there was to be a civil war, they sought an insider.
Would it work?
That was the question. A fiery princess so reminiscent of the brother in his head and a loud prince ready to fight an army just for his people. Nikhil’s allegiance to his family, to the war against the light, had begun to crack.
For now, he would be silent. No information out to the party that placed him there. He was to focus on his duties attending to the runaway princess… and perhaps, he may finally give up his doubts on joining her side completely.
