A Hylian soldier of common birth, leading an Outpost at the foot of Lake Hylia as its Commander, slightly beyond the territorial boundary between Hyrule and Zora's Domain. A man who has lived a simple, honest life.
In his youth, he showcased rare talent as a swordsman. So he became a soldier.
For years, he carried out his duties impeccably. As he rose through the ranks, his talent continued to grow, until eventually, he was considered an elite.
So, he became a Commander, and continued to deliver exemplary service to the crown.
As his skill with the sword reached greater heights, his peers began to believe it to be nothing less than a Goddess-given talent.
He was thus dubbed the Sword Saint by the soldiers of Hyrule, and soon, that title had reached the ears of the former king himself.
On the cusp of achieving greater heights however... the house of cards came crashing down.
In a time of crisis, he was given an impossible command, and failed to see it through. Hundreds of soldiers died.
In the aftermath of his failure, his soaring career plummeted, and his title became little more than an ironic insult.
Without even knowing it, he had garnered the mockery and animosity of the Hylian Court. And so, he was given a new mission, more befitting of his fallen station.
He was demoted to a regular soldier, and was assigned alongside his remaining former men to a rundown outpost barely found in the maps, at the borders of Hyrule.
And so, the fame he had acrued faded, and his name disappeared into obscurity.
That, was over a decade ago.
Though disgraced, he continued to carry out his duty with stoic determination.
The shabby leadership of the outpost treated him and his former men as dispensable cannon fodder- a suicidal vanguard against the swarms that inevitably came under their careless and passive presence in Lake Hylia.
Yet, they continued to triumph. Again and again. No matter what they were thrown at.
One day... reports of a Lynel sighting arrived at the Outpost. The cowardly scout, however, failed to report the mane coloring. Only Red manes were 'commonly' found around Lake Hylia, however.
Usually, something to be ignored; to be left for the Zoran Garrison to make the sacrifices necessary to handle.
But... A chance for deeds and merits like no other, with the new Vanguard of able fodder at the Outpost's disposition.
Blinded by his own seemingly bright future, the Commander gathered his forces, with Gwyar and his former men at the front, and made to meet the Lynel before the Zora's did.
The Lynel was white of mane.
The Commander died. Immediately.
Three arrows. Skull, neck, chest. Shot from over 200 meters away at the enemy leader. The Lynel's terrifying instincts and even more terrifying skills immediately shown, the now leaderless soldiers descended into chaos.
The Outpost's forces were effectively routed.
All save their vanguard.
A voice boomed over the chaos as a single man broke off the Vanguard and towards the Lynel- before the Vanguard followed.
When the Zora Garrison arrived, they found a battlefield littered with bodies, arrows... and a headless Lynel. And still standing, with their swords and spears and bows and axes and roaring voices raised to the heavens, were the true soldiers of Hyrule.
The news of the deeds swiftly reached the local lord. And with the Zora Captain and all the remaining soldiers vouching for the veracity of the story- Gwyar became the new Commander of the Outpost.
Under his disciplined command, the shabby Outpost was whipped into shape. Relations with the locals soared as the Outpost began to regularly cull the local monster's population, instead of letting it rise until it became a problem.
Working together closely with the nearby Zoran forces, the Lynels of Lake Hylia and the surrounding lands were culled and pushed towards the mountains. Eventually, his visage became known to Zora and local Lynel alike.
The soldiers of the Zora Garrison began to call him 'Lynel's Bane'.
