A Frosty Homecoming?

Admittedly, it was a foolish thing to have gone out. The Sacred Grove was a safe haven, protected by the Great Deku Tree; no ill or harm should ever come to the Kokiri, the children of the forest. Well, that was until not long ago, when a strange mist ailed them, weakening some and bedridding others. It was some point after that incident, in early winter, when Braedynne had set out, despite the cautions of her friends. It's not like she announced these plans openly, but she didn't quite keep them a secret to everyone either.
Overall, the trip was fine; she met a princess, she nearly got killed by bandits.. all typical for the life of an adventurer! Or at least she told herself that. Reminiscing on the events of her first trip out, it really wasn't all that bad, though. Just.. maybe it was a lot of walking. Braedynne didn't regret her decision. She still had some fun, learned a lot, and met a lot of nice people. Heck, maybe the best part was, she had picked up a tome on alchemy, as well as a number of reagents that were quite uncommon in the Faron woods, or even unobtainable.
Now Braedynne had a lot to study and experiment with again! There were a lot of new ideas and techniques to try out and refine, and new ways she could extract magical essence, new things she could create! All the possibilities rather excited her, expanding her arsenal and being able to do more useful things, helping people more... that tome was the single-most valuable thing she had purchased, spending nearly her very last rupee. The old crone that ran her shop was reluctant to give the book up to a child at first, but when it became apparent that there was more than met the eye, and that Braedynne was quite knowledgeable in alchemy, that won her over. Still, the deal was rather a temporary thing.. such knowledge was worth far more than a few rupees. It would have to be returned later. Another reason to leave the woods again...
Braedynne sighed, mulling it all over in her head. Yes, she'd need to leave home again at some point. And someone wouldn't be happy...
Stepping inside their quaint village, Braedynne treaded lightly, practically making a beeline for her home. There were a few surprised looks and some happy waves, as she passed by a few of her brothers and sisters.
"Hi, Braedynne! Welcome back!" Katerina said.
Braedynne smiled broadly. Or, well. As broadly as she could without opening her mouth at all, and she waved back, still walking fairly briskly.
Gotta keep moving.. she thought to herself. The sooner Braedynne got settled back into her home, the sooner she could pretend she hadn't gone, like nothing had ever happened, the better.
"How was the trip?" her friend persisted, beginning to follow Braedynne.
"Oh! It was good! I'll tell you all about it later!"
Argh, would you PLEASE leave me for a bit? she thought.
It seemed Katerina was picking up on the fact that Braedynne was avoiding something. Or someone? Ah. Right...
"Um. Okay. Later tonight then?"
"Sounds good!" Braedynne said. Soon she made it to her home and ducked inside. Whew. Well that was a bullet dodged. For now.
Looking around, the place was pretty much as she left it: a hearth to the right, a modest kitchen to the left with a stove, a bed on the opposite wall, between them. There was also a bit of furniture here and some nice rugs for the comfort of herself and other visitors. It was all pretty much one big, round, open room with a bit of a staircase carved into the left wall that lead up to a wide open second floor, and a couple ladders opposite those stairs for convenience.
The upper part of Braedynne's house was where she had conducted a number of her experiments, with a couple windows you could open up there for fresh air. But it was still pretty much all open, mostly a big hole where you could see the floor below, and a large, round, wooden chandelier dominated this empty space. Opposite where the alchemy apparatuses rested, and a small table for scribbling notes, the other walls of the 2nd floor was pretty much all shelves, etched into the wood. There were many books in these shelves, and many jars, some clear, some opaque, some labeled, some not. Apparently it served as her little library and storage area for ingredients, which.. worked, she supposed. Though the footing here was a bit narrow and pretty tenuous, with little to no safety supports.
Well anyway, Braedynne hadn't really been gone long. It was only a couple weeks, if even that. It didn't look like dust had accumulated, nor any cobwebs. She might want to do a little sweep and wipe down later when she was feeling settled in and not so lazy. Still, it felt rather apparent that the place hadn't been inhabited in a while. The hearth was just cold and empty, as was her little kitchen, with no perishable foods. All her alchemy stuff upstairs was completely cleaned out and put away as well. Breadynne might not be the tidiest of the kids here in the Sacred Grove, but she at least had the wherewithal to wrap up her experiments, put things away, and get her affairs in order before embarking on her journey.
Now that she was back, though.. it was time to get back into the swing of things. She sighed and set her pack down on her bed. Seeing as the place felt so cold, she left her cloak on as she started setting to work to get a nice fire going again. Well, at least the sun was still up, so there was still some daylight filtering in through her door and windows, but it wasn't really much. She'd want to light up her chandelier again too...
