Several days had passed since the three-pronged expedition to Faron Woods, Lake Hylia, and Goron Mines.
Calling them all a success might be a stretch, and Marianne definitely did not consider it a success after what she had lost. Still, reports of strange activity had been drastically reduced in those three areas after the recovery of Twilight Mirror Shards, so they certainly had done some good. Now, it was just a matter of what to do next.
With that in mind Marianne asked her brother for permission to invite the leaders of the expeditions personally to discuss their respective journeys, and perhaps gaining new first-hand insights on what really happened. She felt she should have done this sooner, but between her own recovery and recent meeting with a certain mask salesman, she thought they finally had a lead. It was only right to let the other brave heroes abreast of recent development.
So, after the usual pleasantries and greetings and offers of condolences where it was due, Princess Marianne was in the middle of explaining her group’s trip to Faron Woods. It was one of the smaller meeting chamber in The Royal Compound, with only her invitees and a few select scribes seated around a mahogany round table. Modest drinks and refreshments were provided around the table.
In the middle, the three Twilight Mirror Shards were placed –the source of all this misery- individually encased in protective case made of clear glass-like material filled with protective runes. They were laboriously crafted by Professor Resmowr and Lord Mondeau of the Hyrule Academy of Magic, with some help from Goron best blacksmiths and the princess’ financial support, to safely contain the corrupting miasma of the evil artifacts. Even then, the protective magic must be re-cast daily. So strong was the power within the shards.
“As I mentioned before,” the princess continued, standing on her position of honor on the right side of the King’s empty seat, “Our previous scouts have reported disturbances in this particular area of Faron Woods, warranting us sending several exploration squads to scour the area. This particular squad I was attached to found an abandoned ruin after traversing poison-filled mist, the place we now believed might be the Forest Temple of legends.”
She shifted a little, looking as poised as usual. “A horde of monsters besieged us that very night, as if wanting to prevent us from continuing further. We decided to send a small group consisting of Knight Captain Tethras, Knight Dragelion, Vladimir, Lady von Brandt, and myself and my sheikah guard Chaska inside while the rest of the knights held off the monsters. Inside we witnessed firsthand the corrupting influence of the shard. A sentient Darknut and a personal acquaintance of mine seemed to be possessed by the shard, attacking us in an uncharacteristically vicious way far removed from his personality. He snapped out of it after a fight and joined us afterwards.”

A sentient Darknut and a personal acquaintance of mine seemed to be possessed by the shard, attacking us in an uncharacteristically vicious way far removed from his personality. He snapped out of it after a fight and joined us afterwards.”
She did not, however, elaborate on how they snapped the Darknut out of it. “A rather monstrous baboon hounded us all the way, sabotaging our attempts to venture deeper. This baboon was also influenced by the shard, for after we beat him he lost his previous aggression. Curiously, we also found a group of temple monkeys which somehow were not affected by the shard. Indeed, they proved to be quite helpful.”
And the next part… One would notice that one of her hands was gripping the hem of her dress, as if trying to keep her emotion in check. “Finally, in the deepest part of the temple we found a very large, very aggressive Deku Baba. This organism, we believe, had been in contact with the Twilight Mirror Shard for a long time that it not only mutated it into a monstrosity, but also made it exceedingly violent.” At this she glanced at the shards on the table with apprehension. Such small things could create such an abomination…. “We managed to overcome this Deku Baba. But unlike our Darknut and the baboon, this one disintegrated once the Mirror Shard lost its influence. Knight Dragelion received the mark of The Triforce of Courage –one that we are still looking into. Soon after, a portal appeared. A large hand covered in black and red markings attempted to grab Knight Dragelion, but was rebuffed by the mark’s light. It then aimed towards me but Lady von Brandt got in the way and was taken instead. We have been searching for clues to her whereabouts ever since.”
It was painful…. Extremely painful for Marianne to speak of that nightmarish event in such a calm, dispassionate tone. But Marianne was not Marianne if not a consummate professional. No matter. She could cry once more after her duty as the caretaker of the realm was done.
Her silver gaze swept over the select few present. “You will find the details of what happened in our official records in front of you, honored guests, although I ask that no copy is taken outside of this room. An official version of events will be sent to Monster Research Council, Zora Kingdom, and Goron Village later after this. ”
Finally sitting down, she exhaled. “That is my version of how we obtained the shard in Faron Woods, and some interesting points I noticed. I would kindly like to hear each of your experience in return.”
Of course, the related officials had compiled official reports from each group beforehand, but there was no substitute for first-hand account. Hands politely folded on the table, Princess Marianne waited.
