A large dog with yellow fur would bear down on one of the bokoblins and grab its foot, causing it to lose its footing as the dog dragged it across the field before a blade quickly finished it off. The Knight of Hyrule, fully armored, had calmly hopped off Cabuck and set himself upon the monsters. It had been a bit of a routine patrol, just something to keep himself in shape now that things at the farm were settled for the day. The roads tended to be dangerous with the effects the Twili’s magic was having on local monsters, so it was the least he could do, he figured.

But it seemed that the one he had come to help was having no trouble taking on the bokoblins himself.

Perhaps a massive dog dragging a monster around wasn’t the first thing that Soljulan expected to see today, but there it was. The Gerudo would find himself pinned down momentarily, but the sight of the dog had apparently made them think better of it as they ran off. Josh reached down to scratch behind the dog’s ears then as he held out a hand to help Soljulan up to his feet.

“Looks like you might not have needed my help after all.”

Well, that was one way to get on the blonde’s good side. He chuckled when the man began to baby talk the large pupper, who responded quite eagerly and was about to bowl the Gerudo right back over had Josh not held him back by the collar while he pulled the man to his feet. Once he was to his feet, something was evident quite quickly. He was rather short for a Gerudo, wasn’t he? Not that he’d say that aloud.

“No need to lavish praise, anyone would have done the same” he answered with a gentle smile, one that turned to a smirk at the corner of his lip at the man’s later comments. They were a… Bit, weren’t they? A bit of a character, that’s what he was thinking.

The man asked what he was doing out here at this hour, and he scratched his head sheepishly in turn. “I was off on a work assignment and it went a bit late. I had just reported back and was on my way home, thought I’d keep an eye on the roads with the war going on, and that’s when I saw all the commotion. And what of you? You and your friends peddlers?”

He wasn’t the most used to seeing traveling entertainers. Came with never quite becoming a city boy, despite his position.

There was hopping, bowing, and a whole lot of showboating. It sort of reminded him of those jugglers back in Clock Town, or the guy with the weird instrument that he stretched back and forth, what did he call it? He had been so busy trying to make ends meet, or trying to help people, that he had never really had the chance to enjoy the world around him until he had come to Hyrule. And after that, well… Ordon wasn’t exactly known for its performers. So to say that Josh was inexperienced with this type was an understatement. So all he could do was scratch his head awkwardly at all of this, all while Buddy tried to lunge forward and join in on the festivities and would no doubt topple over everyone around him. But a whistle called him back.

The Gerudo called the group entertainers. Musicians, storytellers. He called himself a dancer and acrobat. He knew some of these words by textbook, but wouldn’t know them by sight. “That sounds… Interesting" he responded as politely as could be. “I am… Not exactly familiar with this sort of thing, to be honest. We don’t get a lot of performers in Ordon Village. But it does sound like you lot enjoy your work. That’s good.”

It was an observation but he supposed he should have seen the sarcasm coming. Up came a slight shrug of his shoulders as he moved onto the question asked. He scratched his chin as he considered Ordon, and how he would describe it to someone primarily used to the city.

“Hmm… It’s bustling. But not in the same way as the city, not exactly. It’s just as lively, though obviously not as crowded. But in the city, you have hundreds of people all rushing around at all hours of the day. They don’t look around or try to enjoy the scenery or absorb where they’re at, they hardly have the time. They’re always looking forward and in their own worlds, always rushing with how big the city is and how little time there is to do much of anything. Even those in the midst of recreation rush there as if the activity might grow legs and run away if they don’t hurry. You may see the same person a hundred times and never once speak.”

Then came the comparison. “Ordon is bustling in of itself, but everyone takes it a bit slower. It’s smaller, and most of the people who live there take up farming or trading type occupations. Sometimes both. So everyone is pretty busy. But it’s… Slower. Calmer. Everyone actually looks around when they walk, and sees what’s around them. They stop often and get to know their peers, and while Ordon’s not a small hovel anymore, most people who live one another know each other. We all try to help one another out if we can, too. My other job takes me away from home often, and sometimes longer than I’ve hired out hands for. I have neighbors who know that, and if it comes to it, have gone out of their way to hire hands to take care of the remainder of the time until I return. I repay the cost, obviously, and I try to repay the favor best I can. Winters like these make things harder too, so we do all we can to help each other out.”

I didn’t know how to explain otherwise” he admitted, noting to himself to try and figure out something a bit shorter for next time. Ordon was a farming village, simple as that. But it was still busy in its own right, in a different way from Hyrule City. And then boots got yeeted at Sol’s back.

He blinked a few times, letting them play out before he nodded his head slowly when Sol offered a place at the fire. Whistling for the horse and dog, they accompanied him as he moved to the fire and removed his gauntlets. Attaching them to the harness on the horse, he shook his hands out before holding them before the fire.

“You sound like you’ve all been together for some time.”

By the looks of him, it sounded like he had been with them for the better part of his entire life. That was quite a lot of time to be around people. They were essentially his family. He almost envied him, even if he didn’t exactly envy whatever circumstances would bring him into this situation at the age he must have been to begin with. At least he had a full childhood with his family. Or close enough, anyway. The end was cut a bit short.

“A bloody lotta fightin’, that’s how we do it” he answered Sol’s remark with a small laugh. “I live right next to Faron Woods in particular, so monster attacks are basically expected. I’ve been helping hold it down for a few years, but it’ll be a relief when the Royal Family can finally get some troops out there.”

With his new position, he couldn’t always be there when trouble struck. And the last time monsters had come while he was away, well… He wouldn’t forget that day, that’s for sure.

“Heh. I wish. It would certainly make this a lot easier” he answered with a small laugh. And perhaps they wouldn’t have lost so many people, at that. But many monsters just couldn’t be reasoned with, unfortunately. That was the sad reality of things, and all they could do was defend themselves the best they could. And the monsters had been far more aggressive as of late, and now more powerful than ever at that.

They would continue their losses for a little while yet, it seemed. He smiled gratefully as he accepted some curry when offered. They were a nice lot, for sure. Then Sol asked about the defense status of their settlements. “Unfortunately not. Kakariko preferred to defend itself and Ordon is a bit out of the way. Though Kakariko’s been guarded more by the Royal Family since it was nearly destroyed completely, and I’ve been pushing for Ordon to receive the same. We’ve been defending ourselves through a civilian force for years now, and before, that was enough. It’s not anymore.”

He gave a bittersweet smile at that. “I agree. But there’s no use crying over what’s passed now. What I care about is what’s going to keep my village safe tomorrow. While I wish it coulda been sooner, I’ll take having it now. So I’ve been meaning to try and get the King’s ear on the subject, see if that works any better. Not easy when a war is starting, but…” he trailed off, shrugging his shoulders.

He was just going to have to do his best, that was all he really could do. “Hopefully being a knight will help get me that audience sooner rather than later.”

Oh yeah, he’d forgotten to mention that part.
