A student at the Knight Academy, Selene is a young woman with big aspirations. The only thing is... The isle of Skyloft is very small. Like everyone else on Skyloft, she has lived in the sky for her entire life, and has grown up with all of her fellow students. Among her best friends is a young man named Josh, a fellow Knight in training who just happens to be approaching his turn for the Knight Ceremony. Selene's still got a year to go, but she's prepared! Her mother, Amelia, is the Headmaster of the Academy... But lately she hasn't been in a very good mood. Not since Selene's brother, Helio, went missing. How hard is it to go missing... on a floating island in the sky?

Many have forgotten the ancient history of Skyloft, and knowledge of its terrific origins has dwindled over the years. All that remains is mere belief and traditions, yet for many generations, it was the Grandmasters and archivists that knew those archaic origins and kept them locked within their hearts.

In the history of Skyloft, few archivists were as eccentric as Amelia Merrows. She knew the archives like the back of her hand, along with much of the traditions that they were to uphold.


Amelia fell into a mutual love with the dutiful son of the previous Grandmaster. After their marriage, they had two children, Selene and Helio, and lived happily for a time. Yet, in a terrible twist of fate, Amelia became Acting Grandmaster after her husband succumbed to a mysterious affliction by a rabid creature possessed by darkness. While his own hands defeated the beast, the Grandmaster now lives in a coma-like state, unable to be roused by anything on the outside and subsisting alone on the blessing of Hylia.

Amelia had the knights search out a cure for her husband's disease in the sky, but soon, she realized and feared that the only way to find anything of remote effect was from the Surface below.

Still, as Acting Grandmaster, she would continue to uphold the duties assigned to her. As of late, she began to read into what history is left of the Surface world, and with her husband's dwindling health, she is starting to consider something perilous...

His father a blacksmith, his mother running the store, and yet Josh grew up with his head in the clouds. As a child, he couldn't help but be mesmerized by the birds in the skies. The Knights that rode upon many of them and got to spend their days patrolling the skies above struck a chord of inspiration in him from an early age. One that did not fade with time. While his parents didn't initially approve, he wound up getting himself into the Knight Academy eventually. He trained and studied hard. Perhaps a bit too hard. Fell asleep in the weirdest places and at the weirdest times. But this young man knew one thing. He wanted it, and he wanted it bad. Every year, he had to sit and watch as others before him got to graduate, and everytime he would watch with anticipation for when it would be his turn.

Soon, his time would come.
