‘…Equipments… looks good. I wonder why they need so many spears… No. Reduce this by one-fifth. Helmets? I don’t recall a recent recruitment draft…. Will check this later…. Braziers are top priorities so this… is good. Next…’
Princess Marianne sat alone on the dining table, reading a few parchments spread in front of her. Periodically she dipped a half-eaten loaf of bread on a bowl filled with cream soup on her side and munched on it, her eyes never leaving the parchments. Plates of steaming roasted meat and fresh salad, with cherry tomatoes on top arrayed neatly on the empty table, along with a big steaming bowl of soup, a small mound of fruits, and a basket filled with still-warm loaves of bread. As far as supper in the castle usually goes, tonight’s fare was rather drab. But for common people table it was sumptuously extravagant. Delicious aroma of smoky meat juiciness and sweet fragrance of fruits filled the small room, beckoning every soul to a delicious feast.
Yet, the princess opted for a simple bread and soup, her attention focused on the parchments rather than the tantalizing food within her grasp. Around her the other seven chairs, three on each side and one on her opposite side stood empty, waiting for their patrons to occupy it. A set of candles were placed strategically between the plates, though they were not for light. The big chandelier hanging on the roof was bright enough for the entire room, small as it be. Rather than troubling herself with the Grand Dining Hall, Marianne had ordered supper to be served on her personal dining room, part of the princess’ compound.
‘…Do arrows cost this much….? Suspicious. Let’s see…. No. This isn’t quality wood isn’t it? I’ll have the weaponmaster opinion on this. Bowstrings… Oh, I know Flick & Sons. Trusty merchants. This is a yes…’
Having get the blacksmith out of the gaol, Marianne took her on her carriage and brought her to Hyrule Castle, chatting a little on their way here. The blacksmith seemed to be very tired though, so Marianne did not push her much should she preferred to rest. She was fine just munching on the coarse bread provided by the warden while thinking of the budget proposal for Southern Outposts which had arrived on her desk earlier in the afternoon.
And here she was, squeezing some last minute review while waiting for the blacksmith to join her on their meal. As soon as they arrived on the princess’ compound, the princess’ maids ushered the blacksmith to a fragrant bedchamber that had been prepared for her, where waited a spotless bed, covered in white linen. Several clean set of gowns in different models and colors had been placed on there for the blacksmith to choose according to her tastes, along with several pairs of indoor shoes. A set of maids waited in the room, ready to help the blacksmith bathe should she wanted to before changing her clothes, or help her clean herself and change should she prefer not to take a bath before supper.
Marianne herself only went to her room to change her travelling clothes into a comfortable cotton gown, colored soft red, with shin-length skirt and loose body-fit before taking her place on the dining table. She also wore an arm-long pair of gloves, a habit she picked up when her arms were still wounded after her reappearance. Most of the scars had already healed, courtesy of her excellent medical team, but Marianne had come to like wearing long gloves anyway.
Taking a bite from her bread, the princess underlined a few words on the parchment and continued her review. The treasurer and her council would ultimately decide whether the proposal was feasible, but Marianne made sure that everything went through her first before the final decision. Her advice and ideas had been irreplaceable, and she had exceptional eyes to spot discrepancies or inconsistencies that might point to mark-up attempts.
Another set of words underlined by her quill pen. In silence the princess waited.
I am sorry for the dip in quality. My words feels unsatisfying even for me I hate this block...
