Courtyard of Roses, Royal Compound, Hyrule Castle inner courtyard.
The very night after the group returned from Arbiter’s Ground.
Late at night, Winter.
The very night after the group returned from Arbiter’s Ground.
Late at night, Winter.
... ... ... ...
... And that is why, I have decided that; more than me, more than anyone, you are the one most suitable to lead Hyrule.
I know you will do your best. You always do.
I will always support you and our kingdom. But this time, in my own way.
Your brother.
Everything you ask for, nothing is above me
I'm shining like a candle in the dark
when you tell me that you love me
I'm shining like a candle in the dark
when you tell me that you love me
Marianne gripped the paper tightly, crushing it in her palms. Tears were streaming down her face like River Hylia in flood.
Not even words. Not even a hug or a pat in the head.
A letter. A letter was all she was left with.
Marianne sniffled, tasting the salty zing of her tears sipping through her lips. Her small frame was covered with a dull crimson cloak, sitting hunched on a stone bench at one end of the courtyard.
She and the others had just landed at Hyrule Castle earlier in the day. But though she had been unconscious during the journey in the airship, once she got her bearings and cleaned herself thoroughly the princess plunged herself right into business, demanding reports of current situation and how the defenses were faring. She visited the medical ward only once, to get herself checked and to check on her comrades, Mrs. von Brandt and Vladimir especially. After that, she left in a hurry with her aides.
That was, until night fell and the stars appeared in the sky....
Then, the letter was delivered.
It had to be right now... of all times....
"...."
It was said that, it was in this very place, when Nayru’s Roses were blooming years ago, that Queen Celeste and her secret paramour General Redwing met for the first time. And it was from their tryst that Marianne was born.
At that time this place must have been a very nice place to be. Fragrant. Colorful. Lovely. Even now when the bushes was barren and biting winter wind instead of floral scent whistling through the naked branches, it was still a delicately structured place. Calm and inviting, but closed off and quite hidden, the sort of perfect place for two lovers to conduct their secret meeting.
Or for someone who needed to cry, but could not be seen in tears in public.
“Why…?”
Marianne just… didn’t understand.
Had she done something wrong? She had been doing her part as best as she could, diligently taking care of the kingdom in her brother’s absence and conducting affairs in his name. Her brother and her sister lost two of their biological parents at the same night. Their grief- Marianne fully understood, as well as their desire for vengeance. She vowed to herself then, that she would hold the kingdom together while they pursued their interest, so that when they inevitably returned, Hyrule would be a better place for the three of them, and they would look after it the same way their parents the King and Queen had done.
They did return, her brother and sister.
Only to leave her again. And now, possibly for good.
She gripped the letter tighter, her shoulders shaking.
“Why…?” she repeated.
But only the cold winter wind answered her whisper.
“Why…? Mother and Father they… *sob t-they entrusted this kingdom to us…. To you….
So… why…?”
It was absurd. It was impossible to understand. Her brother. The perfect prince. A born ruler ever since he could talk… abandoning his duties? If Marianne had heard this suggestion before, she would have the speaker executed for treasonous words, for sure.
And yet…. This letter in her hand…. With no mistake in the handwriting and the seal, delivered by her brother’s own elite…. It left no room for questioning.
Her brother had left the throne to her.
Frustrated, Marianne felt the urge to scream. Just… scream. To shout as loud as she could so that the sky itself knew her grievance. But she kept it down by pounding her knees instead. This is… This is… Why??
“They t-trusted you…” she whispered, choking in her own tears, “They trusted you…. I trusted y-you….*sob And… And you will leave me…. just like this….? I don’t… I don’t…Why…?”
It was unfair. All of this. Unfair! Gritting her teeth Marianne felt her cheek bleeding inside.
She was alone. All alone…. Alone to shoulder the burden of the kingdom.
Before this she had entertained herself that her brother and sister would eventually return, and that she only had to hold out until then.
But now… But now….
“Mother… Father... Bea…. And n-now you, too… W-Why do you all...*sob l-leave me all alone here…? What h-have I done w-w-wrong…?
Tell me why, Leon… T-Tell me… please…. “
Pain. Disappointment. Betrayal. Marianne blinked so hard her eyelids hurt. But the tears -they kept flowing. She would cry tears of blood if she could.
"All... All I wish for... *sob ...is for us three to be... to-together again... *sob To... To dine together again... t-talk together again.... laugh... laugh together again...
Is that... *sob ...is that too m-much... *sob... Is that too much of a w-w-wish...?"
But it was all empty questions, wasn’t it? She would be queen. As much as she loathed that word, she would be queen….
And there was no shoulder for a queen to cry on. Marianne continued her sobbing, lonely and miserable in this little corner of her own kingdom.
Not even words. Not even a hug or a pat in the head.

I think this happens the night before Respite in Turmoil, since Fish stated that one happened one day after their return
