The desert was a stressful place.

Little water, lots of sand, couple monsters… It certainly didn’t inspire hope for places to settle. When this idea had started, Klara knew it would be a big task. It might even begin to take on her entire lifetime. But it was something she looked at with pride, with hope. And so while the desert seemed inhospitable, by the goddesses above would she seek to change that.

So first things first was getting into the desert with a party. Pieces of the desert had been mapped but not in good enough detail beyond where their own borders of settlements lay. Getting those holes patched and the knowledge filled was the first step, if not already laying some of the foundation for plans ahead.

Their party was small. A total combination of three bodies: An adventurer and monster hunter, a Goron with a delightful personality, and the young daughter of a Gerudo chief. At the very least, two fighters with two people who could experience the heat in stride. It wasn’t the part she expected but it would get the job done and even maybe start spreading some word among the paths.

She had sent out a letter to them both to confirm their meeting day and time. If they needed anything, there was the Gerudo market and then they’d be able to get going. Klara settled near one of the stalls, a sand seal specialist, holding her bag in her arms and the Gerudo Orange scarf along her head to help identify their party head.

"So I heard there was a call for an Adventurer of renowned skill, huh? Well, miss, you sure did pick the right guy!"

The swagger of a young braggart reached Klara before the sight of the jerk did, and yet he was unmistakably the adventurer mentioned. Sword bouncing on his hip, large worn cape draped off his back, and a wet rag dabbing his face almost constantly, Ryder Ash wore an incredible smirk as he approached the young Gerudo woman. "So young! Truly the Gerudo are a confident and bold culture to let children head expeditions. I can see why the pay was larger than anticipated." Resting his hand on his blade, the young man's smirk never faded, even as he continued to wipe his forehead with a rag. "I'll have you know I've slain many Lizalfos in my time, with little more than my hands and my wits, while you were still in swaddling clothes. And with my blade? Ha! Even the Stalfos tell tales of terror at my skill. You won't need to fear, Ryder Ash is the best at what he does, and what I do is monster hunting."

A sudden rush of wind hit both Klara and Ryder, allowing him to "epically" wipe his forehead from sweat. "Now, who's left for our little party? Hopefully someone with almost as much experience as me. It'll make the conversation less boring, you see."

Klara I'm so sorry. Please don't ditch him he needs the money

Boy, this was some high pressure, wasn’t it? I mean, sure the heat didn’t bother the Goron very much. He was more than used to the fires of Death Mountain. But actually going out and doing a job this important to where it could decide the fate of an entire village depending on how it shook out? Dorzuma didn’t know how his father, or the warriors of the Goron handled that kind of pressure on a regular basis. But all he could do was his best, right? Still, this would be quite the trek, probably the longest he had ever been on. The Gerudo Desert was a long ways away from Death Mountain, and he couldn’t ride a horse like regular folk. Too big for that. So the best way to travel was to roll, roll, roll your goro and hope for the best!

The trek through the desert hadn’t been too bad and it almost reminded him of home. So by the time they were to meet, Dorzuma had already taken his time stocking up in the village and preparing for the next phase of things.

Throughout the village, a ballad began to play.

“The desert houses many surprises,
Like a little hidden city.
With…
With… Hmm.”

Ahh, this was a hard one. What would go well with it? That was the question. Dorzuma wasn’t really sure, but he would just have to get to it later because he would soon sight his contact. And with it, a rather boastful young man. Not that he could talk, considering his own age. But speaking of, this man did like to talk!

“Ah-hah! It is so good to see we have an experienced adventurer on our side! This will go delightfully smoothly then! Perhaps I shall sing songs of your exploits one day!” Dorzuma praised the boisterous one, reaching out to clap a hand on his shoulder while he turned to the contact. Of course, Dorzuma had one problem. Well, two problems really. One problem was that he wasn’t as used to dealing with Hylians, so the head and the shoulder got a little mixed up and his large clubby hand would land on the Hylian’s head. And the second problem? Dorzuma had a problem with underestimating his Goron strength. Chalk it up to inexperience, but it wouldn’t be a surprise if poor Ryder was sent facefirst into the sand as a result.

Very much unaware of his blunder, the young Goron would bow respectfully to their contact. She was so young! Was it common for folks to venture out at this age? Had Dorzuma spent far too much time moping when he could have begun this incredible adventure sooner? He didn’t know, but he didn’t dwell on it for long. That was then, and this was now.

“You must be our contact. I am Dorzuma Gor-Rordundo, proud son of Chief Solveig. It will be my pleasure to share your company.”

Can I do right by them?"

Ah, the desert always brought the most interesting individuals.

Their trade brought many things from many lands - the fruits of Hylians, the metals of Gorons, and the crafts of the Zorons. Each one had their own personality, never betraying their roots but not seeming out of place in the settlements of the desert. And with each piece, came the personalities and faces of their makers or merchants.

Today, the treasures who came to the desert were in the forms of a prideful Hylian and a stronger Goron. She would offer a polite smile at the boasting of her first guest, comparing their ages and experience until their party was completed with the being of Earth. When requests for company and aid had been put out, Klara had already gotten used to the eccentricity of their diversity. She hoped they would be as delightful in the field as they seemed to be here.

Offering a bow of her head and a hand to her chest in greeting, Klara would begin. “It’s a pleasure to meet the both of you. Thank you for your response and company on this trip.” She raised her head, “I am Klara Neri, daughter of Chief Misae. As stated in the letters, we’re to further move into the desert to map and scout possible settlement locations.”

“As you may be aware, the Gerudo people don’t have as permanent settlements as others. The desert isn’t easy for many and several tribes split into their own circles.” Klara stepped to the side to motion at her own home village, “Many of us get along well, with much focus on trade and crafting, but concerns about unity and water are consistent matters of concern.”

“So our goal in our exploration and mapping is to find a large enough oasis or location that a fairly sizable population can settle safely. Staying close to the desert entrance is ideal, of course, however it’s fairly flexible in that regard. This trip will be a little difficult simply because we are moving past our traditional settlements, so we will be camping, possibly facing monsters, and rationing water.”

“Horses regrettably don’t do well in the sand here, so we’ll be using sand seals.” Klara looked to Dorzuma with a bit of concern. “To my knowledge, Gorons don’t use horses, correct? How you’d like to travel, of course, is up to you; however if we cannot find another method of quicker travel for all of us, we may go on foot.” It may be slower but she would not leave anyone out as much as possible. Gorons rolled, sure, but she wasn’t fully aware of their ability to travel in sand versus a more sturdy surface such as rock or road.

“Before we set off, are there any questions either of you would like to ask?”

Stories told in the orphanage said the Gerudo sands were edible to the taste, and that a wanderer could spend their lifetime eating only the grains of sand and never hunger for more. Others heard the sands were made of gold, and that the Gerudo were fools to share their precious sand with others. After having been shoved into the grainy sands by his new Goron companion, Ryder now determined the sands were neither edible nor made of gold. He was going to get revenge on Tomas for this.

Standing up, coughing out sand and wiping his face, Ryder quickly composed himself again, standing with unwavering bravado. "Hail, son of the Goron Chief! This will be a most intriguing endeavor." Dusting himself off, Ryder would nod as Klara continued to explain the mission. A new settlement in the desert is a momentous occasion; it's part of the reason why Ryder was so interested in the work. Still, the desert is no place for trapsing around without a plan; monsters lurked around every dune, and like Klara mentioned, water would be painfully absent from their travels. "An impressive achievement, if we were to accomplish it. A new home for Gerudo... Why, you would be remembered for years to come by your people, Klara Neri. Anything I can provide, be it my experience in warmer climates or my skill with my blade, you have it."

Ryder stopped, stroking a finger across his chin. "On my way here, i noted there were several, much smaller pockets of water off the main road. However, I imagine we're looking for a larger oasis, yes? Something massive that won't fade after repeated use. Do we have any spots prepared to travel to first? That may be useful for rationing water."

Ryder continued, "As for transport, it may be a bit pricey, but we could get a whole group of sand seals to help Dorzuma across the dunes. Wheels don't tend to do well over sand, and your rolling is... well, just a wheel honestly."

Blissfully unaware of his botch, Dorzuma grinned joyfully at the polite young lady, who introduced herself as the daughter of a chief herself! “And living up to the name already. It may be you that becomes worthy of song after all!” Dorzuma teased with a cheeky laugh. He listened carefully to her briefing. So the Gerudo were scattered, and she hoped to at least consolidate things a bit through a proper functioning settlement so her people could survive, and others that joined them. If she could achieve unity, even better. An admirable goal, truly.

Though he scratched his head a bit when she said they would be using sand seals. And even she knew that it may be a concern. “I am able to attempt to roll if it comes to it, but I do not know if it will work. And I am not accustomed to riding anything. We do not have sand seals on Death Mountain, and the horses the Hylians ride are too small for us” he explained, suddenly sheepish at the realization of how much of a fatal flaw this could be to their mission. She was at least amiable to traveling on foot, but he knew that it would be ideal to use the sand seals. “I have not encountered a sand seal, but if it can fit me, I can at least try to learn.”

Their praise was kind and Klara would simply smile politely in return, bowing her head in a silent thanks. But they had to get back to the matter at hand… Traversing the desert. Klara had expected it to be a bit of a struggle, given the desert's unusual terrain, but this was certainly a pickle.

Wheels didn't often do well in the sand due to a lack of firm surface and traction - that was why many preferred more sled like options, as if one could go through snow. Sand Seals were fantastic replacements for horses but there was only so much they could carry at once, and had a tendency to wander if untrained or unbound.

"Pardon me, I'll discuss this matter with the seal handler." Klara had a vague idea of what to do for faster travel, but she wanted to confirm first. She dismissed herself to talk to the seal specialist, going back and forth about the logistics. The result was as expected, and Klars regrettably returned with the same answer she had started with: "The sand outside of standard routes is likely too unstable, or loose, to safely travel with rolling..

"I've acquired two smaller sand seals for single use, and the handler is getting their strongest seal and some additional to help in moving both our supplies and you, Dorzuma, along the sand safely. We'll go a little slower to not exhaust them too quickly, but it will still be quicker than on foot." Klara confirmed, looking between her companions, "Either way, I hope you both have some camping gear as well. Sand is soft but not always pleasant." An attempt to lighten the mood with humor as well as concern for their general wellbeing ajd comfort.

"The cart we'll be using is over here.. It's a tad small, but if you have any gear you're uncomfortable carrying on your own or would like to get settled, please feel free. Now is the time to stock up on water and rations while we're still near the settlements." The Gerudo moved to pull her belongings onto her back, wrapping fabric around her head to protect herself from extra sun with a makeshift hood.

Once they were all prepared, the Gerudos would bring the party and their equipment to the seals and get moving while the sun was still in the sky. They may be able to travel at night, sure, but the desert could get uncomfortably cold for Hylian and Goron alike… so Klara wanted to keep moving while they had the chance. As they set off on their journey, Klara kept herself more towards the front due to her smattering of knowledge of the sands.

"There are a few places I am aware of that may work, so we'll head to them first." The resources were scarce and old, some entirely on hear-say or rumors, and she didn't want to pull them too deep into the desert.. Even if they could find a significant piece of sandstone, if they could build a city or a large settlement in there, Klara may take it as a win.
