The memorial statue of General “Redwing” did not get many visitors. In fact, there usually was none whenever one came to visit this off-the-trail place, here at the forgotten fringes of the Gerudo Desert.
Which was a pity, for the statue itself offered a magnificent spectacle. Sculpted in the likeness of the General when he was alive, it portrayed a handsome, muscularly built Hylian-Gerudo straight out of the bedtime stories, standing proud against the backdrop of the vast red of the desert. His sharp eyes were almost lifelike as he stared at the direction of The Bulblin Camp far away on the horizon; his spear pointed towards it heroically, while his legendary shield ever-ready to protect his beloved Hyrule behind him.
And for those who knew him, his exploits were indeed worthy of any heroes. He almost single-handedly brought the Hyrulean Army back from the brink of total annihilation against the relentless assault of one of the largest and most vicious horde of monsters to ever came out of The Bulblin Camp, led by one hulking monstrosity known only as The Beast. General Redwing and his Gerudo allies held the line against the furious slaughter which engulfed three of the five provinces, saving settlements and inspired the populace to fight back. And finally, with the blessing and prayer of the Royal Family he led an all-out assault to the very heart of the monster horde. This statue marked the very spot where the general and his army first entered the desert proper, in what would eventually became one of Hyrulean Army’s finest campaigns.
Alas, the general perished at his hour of greatest glory, sacrificing himself to allow the bulk of his army to escape in an unexpected counterattack, the very day after the war was won by the death of The Beast and its elite monsters. His body was never recovered. The tragedy happened only eighteen or nineteen years ago.
But due to its place out of the usual route in and out of the desert, the memorial statue, a reminder of triumph and loss, was left in this place collecting red dust. It spoke of the uncanny ability for the masses to move on from the past, but was inherently sad at the same time. Save for the old veterans and their families or occasional scholars learning about the past, the statue of General Redwing was mostly forgotten.
Which was why Marianne was surprised when she found someone was already there when her horse arrived to a stop.
“It is rare for General Redwing to have a visitor,” she said, smiling at the stranger. She led her horse to a post with water through to tie him there. “Are you perhaps a learner of history and lores? Here to see his likeness with your own eyes?”
The sun already moved to the west, but there was plenty of time before dusk and even more time to travel back to the nearest Gerudo settlement, where everyone no doubt crossed before taking the path to this memorial. At present Marianne looked just like any of the travelers or merchants often seen riding across the desert. Plain, dark riding attire was covered by her trusty crimson cloak, already a little dusty from the travel, while her short raven hair was let loose, fluttering slightly in the breeze. She presented too lithe a figure to be regarded as outdoorsmen or seasoned merchants, but one could easily think of her as a scholar instead.
And if her smile was any indication, a kind-hearted scholar too.
