Wrong Kind of Dive [Open]

Mataoka was a patient and understanding Rito, and it showed as he cut through the skies, demonstrating sharp turns and using Lake Hylia, so far below the Sky Province, to teach these younger warriors how to cut their dives properly. Quite a few of the poor fledgling warriors plummeted into the water and had to take a moment to shake the water off their feathers, make sure they were dry, and try again.

While they could use all of the air space they wanted, Lake Hylia was a softer and more consistent measure of how they cut their dives. The reaction of the surface of the lake showing how close they got to the water before stopping their dive. And honestly, it was much better than training the other Rito over solid ground as they better learned how to control their descent, angles and swoops more than what was required over basic flying. It strengthened their wings as well, as they got stronger, they would fold and fall from higher up, as simple as that.

Finishing one last demonstration, Mataoka would fly to one of the bridges of Lake Hylia, stepping out onto a dock and looking up at the fledgling warriors on a cliff edge across the lake, stretching their wings and bodies better.

Eventually it started, each warrior leaping into the air, folding and halting themselves right above the water, among them the smallest still smacking into the water, coming back to him, looking wet and mildly ashamed. "There is no shame in failure, only lessons to be learned, little fledgling. Go rest, I'll call a break soon." He spoke to the young warrior in training, watching the cockatiel like Rito walk off to his set resting place for the evening.
