Twilight hung over the town as Kaythenia walked it's streets, avoiding the main square this time. Thankfully it was a warm evening and there were few people bustling around at this time. The citizens were either wandering towards the Inns and Taverns or to Home if they were so Lucky. The Bard kept her eyes closely trained on the area, just incase.. For now she could breathe a sigh of relief, for now at least. She reached inside the bodice of her shirt and pulled out her true wallet, in her first few months alone she had not been wise to the ways of thieves but had learned quickly. She kept a fake one with only a few rupees tied to the belt about her hips and the other inside her bodice, so far it had worked perfectly well. It was feeling a little too light for her liking sadly though, at this time of the evening she might be able to earn a few rupees performing in one the taverns. There were plenty to choose from in the district, the young woman just had to choose carefully for numerous reasons.
Kaythenia turned and crossed the cobbled street into the Tavern District, the air was buzzing with chatter, laughter and general mirth, from some places lively music played and bright lights danced in the lanterns outside. One place caught her eye, 'The Fairy's Fountain', she glanced in through the window. Seemed crowded enough for her to easily blend in if she had to. She took a deep breath before pushing the door open, a few people looked up at her entrance but most paid her no mind. She crossed the room, her booted feet sounding on the floorboards as she made her way to the bar, leaning back against the wooden bartop. Surveying the room, seeing what she had to work with. She waved the barmaid down and ordered a pot of tea to the spare table near the window. The Magess took her seat and brought out the deck, wrapped in brightly coloured silk. Carefully unwrapping it, she spread the silk across the table and shuffled the cards. Noticing a group of women watching her curiously.
“Those of an enquiring mind, ever been curious about your future?”
One of the women came over, planted her hands on her hips, giving Kaythenia a once over. She didn’t say anything for a moment and Kaythenia was almost waiting for someone to kick off at her presence. But she didn’t, she sat opposite Kaythenia, leaning forward as if to take her into her confidence.
“Will I meet a handsome, strong man?”
Kaythenia laid her hand across the deck and a smile quirked at the corners of her lips. “Ten rupees for the reading and we’ll find out.”
There was no bartering, The woman put the gem down eagerly. The others she was with seemed to notice and came to watch, standing around them. Kaythenia shuffled the deck leisurely, now she had an audience. Excellent. She spread the cards face down across the silk, then steepled her fingers, watching the woman with interest.
“Focus on your question, run your hand over the cards, when it feels right, stop and pick it. Lay it out face down. Take four.”
Over a couple of minutes she picked her cards, Kaythenia picked up the rest of the deck and placed it aside. She flicked the first one face up. The Shaman looked from the card with eyes that were both clear and open, and yet there was something ancient within his steady gaze.
“Interesting, your first card, the Shaman. You’re ready for initiate yourself into life’s mysteries. Travelling, gaining experience, confidence and bringing change to your life. Perhaps preparing you for love?”
She glanced up, the woman she was reading for wasn’t the only highly intent face, hanging on her every word. The Magess pretended to be unaware of this as she turned over the second card. A dark, serpentine figure rose from the water, holding a golden mirror to her breast. With her left hand she held a crystal ball.
“The Mirror, patience, now is not the time to force pace or drive on. In your circumstance, love will come in it’s own time.”
Kaythenia turned over the third card. A man and woman stood side by side, between them a maypole, represented by a birch tree, surrounded by wildflowers. She cupped her chin in her hand, as if in thought.
“The Forest Lovers, they represent both balance in love and the union between two people. To love, you must accept yourself and accept the wholeness of another person. Love is it’s own reward.”
The last card was the card that linked the other three together. It was the Knight of Arrows, represented by a Hawk.
“The Knight of Arrows, a messenger of fate, it will help you see through any doubt and uncertainty. Be swift, subtle and follow your instincts.”
The woman seemed pleased by this outcome, she was looking slightly dreamily at the Forest Lovers card. Another woman stepped forward and put her rupees down...a little forcefully but, nevermind.
“When will I meet the man I will call my husband?”
‘I’m sensing a theme here….’ Thought the Magess, but regardless she smiled, picked up the cards and shuffled the deck once more.
