Everything you ask for, nothing is above me
I'm shining like a candle in the dark
when you tell me that you love me

Unfortunately, the young queen held no such inhibition. The moment Desmond said "fine" she immediately sidestepped him and approached the old man, eager to see this ring which promised to call a hero for her. This is just like those in the books, right? Or the Adventures of Lonk The Great Hero? The protagonists succeeded in overcoming a dungeon trial and they were rewarded with an artifact in the end! Not that Marianne had lost all her suspicions, of course. But between her own stroked curiosity and her belief in her own ability to stave off any danger, she could be forgiven for being a little too eager to know.
"Gold?" commented Marianne, staring down on the rings held by the little old man.
"Of the finest quality! See! The inlaid carving cannot be done if-"
But Marianne surprised him by tapping her finger on the ring, with no hesitation. It made a short twink sound.
"Oho! Eager, are we? Surely-"
"Silver," cut the queen, "And copper. And... something else. But this kind of composition and style is mostly from the time of Great Migration. After that, King Daphnes IV's Third Gold Act made golden jewelries of this purity-
"Very impractical." And for once, the old man seemed genuinely impressed, "Oooh yesh! You are not a queen for nothing I see! You know everything! Was it a breeze for you, yes? Because you had me blown away! WAHAHAHA! Even when I am not good, I am still the best!"
Marianne wisely chose to ignore him. "That is, you also tried to impersonate the runes used in that period in your writing. It was quite an amusing attempt." Reaching down, she pinched the smaller ring. "There is a missing centerpiece for this ring. The crystal you mentioned?" And she tried to put it in her finger. But for some reason the ring refused to slip.
She threw a questioning gaze towards the old man. "I've never seen this kind of obstruction magic."
"WAHAHAHA!! Yesh Yesh I forgot!" Cackling with glee, the old man zig-zagged in the air before hovering diagonally, "For the first time, and only for the first time, the ring must be placed on your ring finger by your partner! See? Pretty easy, yes?"
Marianne narrowed her eyes. "And why is that?"
"Ah, spare an old man of questions, O Queen. 'Tis is how it had been decreed by my protectors, Holy mint and Holy dots. I can but obey."
Marianne's eyebrows furrowed. How the old man sounded a little too formal unlike before did not escape her attention. But apparently, she failed to find anything suspicious. Plus, the sun continued to rise and she really wanted to go back!
"Desmond?" she said, turning towards him for his approval. "No, there are no curses on the rings. There is an enchantment but... of the beneficial kind. Though I am not exactly sure yet."
Reaching out towards Desmond, she gave him her ring while the larger ring she kept, ready to place it on Desmond first. The old man floated between them. watching with interest. But Marianne had not realized what it resembled, yet.
