Princesses and Poachers

The woods were cold this time of year. The trees had long begun to sleep, their dried leaves cast off to the ground. Now those leaves made a soft, yet distinctive crunching sound as a small figure carefully treaded over them, meandering along a small game trail that was difficult to see. One could easily mistake her to be a mere child at first. She was only about four and a half feet tall and small and slight in every way. A thick, foresty-brown cloak enveloped her body with the hood drawn up tight to keep out the cold. This cloak obscured her most telling feature, which was her long, vivid-green hair. But something even more telling stood out, aside from her person: a small, floating ball of pale-blue light on tiny gossamer wings. Most people would quickly realize this was one of those mythical fairies.
"Are you sure you want to press on? It is not too late to go back," the ball of light said.
The small figure kept on walking and said, "Well, there's nothing stopping me from going back later, anyway."
"That may be true. But..."
The girl stopped, "Edelweiss, we've been over this a hundred times already. I know it's not exactly safe, but I'm not sure that we can just keep.. keep staying to ourselves, you know?"
The fairy protested. "I know. But Saphe seems to have everything under control."
The girl started walking again, with a snort. "Oh, please.. I mean - yeah, I guess she does..."
"...maybe..."
"I really don't know if I can trust her. I don't mean like she's dishonest. No, I mean, I guess I'm worried about what she may be doing and saying. If she's anything like she already acts around us..." She shook her head. "Well, it's all besides the point. I'm not doing this because of her. I'm doing this because I want to."
Edelweiss floated along silently for a moment before saying, "I know, Braedynne. Let's just be quiet, and be wary of danger."
The girl continued walking through the forest, in silence. She was pretty adept at this and hardly made any noise. Her supple leather boots touched the ground lightly and barely made a sound most of the time. This was mostly due to her efforts to be moving silently as well. For she knew that, in fact, these woods had become more dangerous. In addition to the normal bestiary of critters one might run into - wolfos, stalfos, skull kids, deku scrubs, skulltullas - now there were apparently a greater number of men with evil hearts roaming about these woods. The Great Deku Tree had said this, themself. What these men wanted, or were up to, Braedynne didn't know. But it certainly didn't bode well.
The thought of these men - hooligans, poachers, or what-have-you - skulking about these woods was still rather unsettling. It sent a chill up the Kokiri's spine. Or was that the cold? A breeze seemed to pick up, causing her to wrap her cloak more tightly around herself. She wore a green tunic with long sleeves underneath, and some warm brown pants that should help keep out the cold. On top of those, she wore a beige cardigan and a long, forest-green skirt. She even additionally had a purple shawl and some gloves. But still, it felt kind of miserable being out here. She hoped she would get to this Ordon Village soon...
"How much farther do you think it is?" she asked.
"From what I have heard, perhaps another hour or so. It's said one can easily reach the village before nightfall."
"Oh, good. I was worried-"
"Quiet! Did you hear that?"
Braedynne stopped, turning to her fairy. "Hear what?"
Just then, with the subtle sound of something whipping through the air, and the far less subtle sound of shaft driving into wood, an arrow embedded itself in a tree not more than a foot away from Braedynne's head. She turned her head to the opposite of its trajectory, frozen and wide-eyed with fear. Two masked, cloaked men in furs stepped out from behind some trees, one training the aim of his bow right at her, the other pulling an arrow from his quiver to begin doing the same again.
"Yer lucky ya stopped when ya did, lass. Otherwise I think my warning shot may've accident'ly hit ye instead. But yer not really a 'lass', now are ye?"
Braedynne didn't know how to respond to this. But he mentioned a warning shot, so.. what was he after? Still all but motionless, she swallowed and managed to work up the nerve to ask, "What do you want?"
"Oh, nothin' much," the bandit said, chuckling. "Just somethin' small..." He began to take some steps forward. He was now only fifteen feet away. "Your fairy. Just hand 'er over. Promise we won't hurt 'er one bit. Then we all can be on our way, and no one has to get hurt un-nessarily-like."
Now this situation was getting downright terrifying. And it was clearly showing on the poor Kokiri's face. "Y - you're mad. I can't just..." she began, with tears beginning to well up in her eyes. It was all just wrong. So, so wrong. Like, how could she just 'hand' Edelweiss over?? She was her own being! Her guardian fairy! And her best friend! Even if she wanted to, she probably couldn't even catch Edelweiss in her hands. And these guys? Well if she was dead, her fairy certainly wouldn't stick around to be caught. You know what? Screw it!
This thinking gave Braedynne an idea. The fight-or-flight mechanisms were beginning to start working in her brain. And she chose.. flight! Suddenly, the Kokiri girl jerked and began running in an all-out sprint. The second man shot his bow, but his reflexes were not quick enough and he missed by a large margin. The first man, the smug one who was approaching began to chase but stumbled a bit at first, cursing under his breath.
Braedynne was probably off track on the way to Ordon Village now, but that didn't matter. She had to lose these guys, and fast!
