Trial by fire for a forge of steel /josh/material quest

I've seen a lot in this lifetime of mine
 | The last thing Josh had expected was to be tested like this. He expected to be turned down. Or tested in some trial by combat. Or laughed out of the room. Maybe have those guards set on him. But to go into the deepest parts of the Goron Mines, where most Gorons wouldn't tread? It was a death sentence for most. And yet, Josh didn't seem all that disturbed by it. The only thing that seemed to upset him was that he couldn't use Dragelix in the trial. He considered voicing it. The fact he had to use a stock blade was the only thing that visibly upset him, out of the whole thing. Not being tested, not having to mine the ore himself, not having to face likely certain death. The fact that he couldn't wield his blade, his father's blade. The blade had become almost a part of himself, so he was understandably upset over it. Moreso when he realized that perhaps it was because the Goron felt the blade would not last long enough to clear the trial. Had Dragelix truly been worn down that far? He supposed, if he felt that way... Josh was no smith, he couldn't tell. But... He supposed he'd sooner temporarily wield a new blade, then have Dragelix shatter. Especially in the heat of battle. He didn't like it, not one bit. But he would reluctantly surrender Dragelix and it's sheathe to the Gorons, for the time being. He would take the offered bastard sword, and without a word, follow the Goron Chief into the Mines. He'd brought plenty of water for the Death Mountain trip... But he hadn't realized just what he'd need it for after all. As the two would enter the mines, Josh's eyes would widen. The sheer level of heat completely caught him off guard. He'd fought in caves nearly submerged, he'd endured blizzards, but he'd never once endured a level of heat quite like this. Seven years... Seven years of battle, and yet he'd never experienced this. This was an adjustment, and he immediately let out a rushed breath. "Hylia alive... You know, I've never actually been to a volcano before" He would quip, wiping the sweat from his brow as he would look at the area around him. The lava didn't seem to bother him, nor did the construction. Though who knew what he was thinking on the inside? The only visible thing that seemed to bother him was the heat. But he'd adjust. | "No, I can handle it. There isn't a challenge I've ever backed down from. This is just... New to me, that's all" He would admit, taking a breath as he would step forward, walking beside the Goron as he led, appraising the atmosphere around him. The heat was almost unbearable, and he didn't know how long it would be before the water canteens he had in his pouch would lose their cool, and nutritional value all at the same time. He did have a Red Potion stocked in a bottle, just in case... He'd nabbed it with the Empty Bottle he'd brought from his journeys from afar, far, far away... Bought the potion in town while he was being officially sworn into the Hyrule Military Corps. But it was a one-use potion, he knew. He would only use it if he had to... He just hoped that the water would last. As the Goron would ask again if he wanted to turn back, he merely shook his head once again. "No" He spoke calmly. "Unfamiliar terrain, an unfamiliar climate is naught but a new challenge for a warrior. It'd be a disgrace for me to back down now. Especially when I've already made the trip up here" He would remark. "Besides... If Dragelix is as worn and about ready to break as you've insinuated... Then I'm not leaving without it being tempered. I'll take this challenge of yours a thousand times if it's necessary" Josh would add, turning to look the Goron dead in the eyes. His own eyes were fierce, determined... This Goron wanted to test him, to have him earn the right to use his own weapon? Fine, he'd take this test, and he'd do this as long as necessary to have Dragelix tempered. He wasn't doing this without it. He couldn't. I mean, sure, he could but... It wouldn't be the same. When he wielded Dragelix, it was like his father was there with him. It gave him confidence... It gave him strength, it gave him comfort. And besides... It was all that he had left from him. The only way he could continue his father's legacy. It was only fitting he wielded Dragelix into battle. As they traversed into the main area of the mines, it only seemed to get harder. He dehydrated quickly, but he would hold on, taking gentle breaths, exhales that could be heard audibly as they went. He did find solace in the air pockets though, that gave a gentle fresh breeze of air that was able to refresh him as they went. He noted the beasts that the Goron had sneered at, and instinctively drew his blade, looking upon it with a look that almost seemed like disgust for a moment when it sunk in that he wasn't wielding Dragelix. It wasn't an insult to the handiwork of the Goron at all, but just a general discomfort. But he would manage, he knew. He had to. The monsters didn't seem to attack just yet, but he kept his sword drawn, just in case... OOC: Tags: @solveig |

| A grin and a nod, and nothing more... It seemed the Goron was ready to go from pleasantries to business. That was fine with him. He didn't know the Goron's opinion of him, except that he had referred to him as a "puny human" earlier... Perhaps he would be able to shape the Goron's opinion through the fires of battle. The Goron had mentioned beasts in here after all, and had made it clear that the two would be meeting combat. That was fine with Josh, of course. If he had to prove himself in battle... So be it. He would fight to the very bitter end to accomplish his goals. But his eyes had not left the Dodongo that were crawling along, even as they seemed to be docile. They could attack at anytime, after all. But before they could continue on, it seemed that Josh's hunch was right, as the Dodongo would suddenly become incredibly aggressive, attacking them immediately. Josh normally would have strung his bow, seeming as he doubted the dodongo would be done in much by his own spellset. But obviously, his bow had been destroyed in the prior battle, and so he would have to fight without it for the time being. Josh was a bit crippled in this, it seemed, as his magic would not have the effect that he would like he was guessing, and he didn't have his bow. That only left this bastard sword that he was quite unaccustomed to in order to fight with. Josh was for sure at a disadvantage. When Solveig would knock the Dodongo down, Josh would watch as he punched it in the face, took a burning shot, and then punched and threw it over the edge. Josh then looked up at the other dodongo, cursing the fact he didn't have his bow. And fire spells wouldn't work on it most likely... Gah, figures, Josh was incredibly handicapped, using a sword he wasn't used to, AND being unable to use his ranged magic, or his bow. Why did he have to- Wait, what if... "If I could just blind it..." Josh would mutter as he would begin to charge up a fireball in the palm of his left hand. He would let out a cry as he would throw it, yelling out "Hey! Ugly!" Toward the scaly dodongo, catching it's attention and causing it look at him just in time to be hit in the eyes with the fireball. Being blinded caused it to lose it's grip, and fall down toward them, falling on it's back. Josh would plunge the bastard sword into it's exposed stomach, though would have to quickly dodge to the side as it would breathe fire. Josh's skin wasn't made of rock, obviously... Josh would stop it from rolling back onto it's front and being near-invincible again by stomping an armored foot on it's exposed underside, before plunging the sword into it's tail, which he'd read in books was their fatal weak spots. The monster would let out a cry before falling limp, and Josh would push it with an armored foot into the lava. "Thank Hylia these things are much smaller then the lizards I've fought of similar species where I came from..." Josh would mutter, letting out a breath. OOC: Tags: @solveig |

| "Thank you" He spoke gingerly between breaths. The heat was making it hard for the Hylian to breathe properly, and in turn, made it harder to fight. So any help would be appreciated. Josh was prideful, make no mistake about it. And if the Goron had made it clear this was his fight and his fight alone, he would abide by it and refuse to ask for help. But that wasn't the case, and Josh wasn't stupid enough and prideful enough to refuse his help by principal, when it was clear he didn't have to. Besides, the Goron had already killed one of the Dodongos. They were way past the "no-helping" stage now whether he liked it or not. So he might as well accept the help while he was already handicapped by the heat, his spell choice, and handicapped by a lack of his own weapon as well as his bow. With Solveig's permission, Josh would walk toward the water's edge, waiting for him to spot any monsters before he would drink anything. He was thirsty to all hell, and would happily take a drink, but had to make sure it was safe first. "I hope you don't intend to dive in. I don't think even I could get you out if you do" Josh would remark, scratching his head. OOC: Tags: @solveig |

| Josh was luckier, he hadn't been burned. Of course, if he had, he wouldn't be as well off as Solveig was now. While heat based spells hit about the same for each species, it was a fact that Josh was skin and bone, and Solveig was... Well, rock. Josh was as quick as a cheetah, and as strong as an ox, but the natural resistances that Solveig had gave him a serious advantage over him in a volcano like this. But it still seemed, as Solveig would clean himself, that Goron could still be wounded. Still had hands that could be punctured and bitten. He wondered then, how much of the Goron was skin? How much of the Goron was rock? Was it their backs that were rock? Their bodies but not all of it? How much was skin and how much was rock? He hadn't met many Goron, and hadn't really been in combat instances with any of them. "If I might ask, just how much of a Goron is rock, and how much is skin?" Josh would inquire toward Solveig. "Forgive my bluntness, I'm just wondering due to the combat ramifications. I know Gorons have heavy endurance and mass, and that parts of them are wholly rock, but how much and what? Your hands are bitten, potentially infected, as though they were skin and bone like mine. Are they a mix of both, or are they skin while your body is rock?" Josh would add. It was a warrior's curiosity, really. The Goron were generally a warrior race, and they had some serious resistances. But when should Josh be concerned when allied with one, or when should he not be concerned in the way that he'd be if allied with a fellow Hylian? Though when it came to bites, Josh would pipe up again. "To be honest, this is the first time I've encountered these smaller Dodongos. Where I came from before, or well... Not where I grew up, but where I spent a period of time, and where I made my living fighting... Dodongos were far bigger. Their scales were as impenetrable as the strongest of metals, their fiery breath as hot as a volcano... Or, well, it was certainly as hot as this volcano anyway. Their bites were feared, and generally when they bit, they took hands off. While these yelpers are smaller, and their bites don't seem to be as strong, nor is their flame... Their size actually makes them much more of a threat. They're much faster, and their scales still seem to be incredibly durable. What I find more terrifying then a Dodongo, is a faster Dodongo. Though I wonder if any of the larger ones migrated here... I'll have to consult a book sometime." Josh would shrug his shoulders. "My point is, I'm not all that accustomed to the monsters here. Those smaller dodongos, which I mistook for the young of the ones I'm used to, but was mistaken, are completely new to me. But I'll take your advice on the biting front. Another thing... Are you sure you're going to be alright with that bite wound?" Before long, it seemed that indeed Solveig intended to continue, and due to no monsters, Josh would refresh himself, taking a long drink to cool his throat and his body. And as his canteens had begun to dry despite having drank very little from them, Josh would take the time to refill his canteens to the brim as well. He had to make a note of how quickly they became hot and undrinkable in this heat... He'd have to drink them quicker now. Josh was used to rationing water. He couldn't do so here. It'd go bad before he had a chance to drink it all. Once he'd done so, they were on the move again, into another cavern. Lizalfos were ahead, and he watched their movements closely, as though analyzing them as they scrapped... Gauging their speed, the ferocity of their blows... Josh didn't get a chance to scout his opponents much, but when he did, he was quick, thorough and generally quite efficient in making use of the short time they had... | Thick hide, honed through combat and wear and tear... Interesting. The Goron were an interesting race indeed, and the more that he knew, the better he would be able to work with them, alongside them... And even in combat against one if that somehow ended up being the case. He certainly hoped the latter wouldn't come, but it was good to always be prepared for anything. Josh was a tactician. A leader. He always had been. He was quite constantly prepared, if he could be. Perhaps one day this would make him a successful leader in Leon's army. "If you're sure" He spoke simply toward the affirmation that the Goron would be alright. When it came to the Lizalfos, it seemed they were through with taking on one another, and had decided to make mincemeat of them next. Josh would draw the bastard sword, still unhappy that he had to use it over Dragelix, but it would do he supposed. He would twirl the weapon in one hand as he would slowly walk toward the Lizalfos. It seemed the bigger one took that as a challenge, and would charge toward him. Josh would crack his neck, taking a gentle breath... Oh, he was looking forward to a real challenge for once. The Dodongos didn't count, they didn't have weapons... These folks did. For the first time, he was finally able to fight blade to blade... He couldn't remember his fight at the festival, it was all a blur to him... And then a smile would cross his lips. It was as though he were finally home... Finally home... The Lizalfos would reach him and slash, and Josh would quickly dodge to the side, slashing past the Lizalfo's own side with a quick, precise strike from his blade. He wasn't used to this blade, so it wasn't as efficient as Dragelix was to him, but he would make do. The lizalfos would let out a cry, and slash blindly, it's rage blinding it's attack and making it fight sloppier. The attack would be ducked, and Josh would deal two slashes in succession under the arm areas, backflipping out of the way of the vertical slice from the Lizalfos, letting out a joyful hum as he did, as though he were actually enjoying this! The Lizalfos wouldn't be able to stop Josh in time as the moment he landed, he would precision toss the blade. It was a risk, for sure, but the bastard sword would impale the Lizalfos straight through the skull. Josh wouldn't waste any time, charging toward the Lizalfos and frontflipping through the air, pulling out the blade and slicing through it's neck in one fell swoop as Josh would land on his feet... | Josh figured that the bigger Lizalfos was just choosing the smaller target. Josh was no small man, by any means. But the Gorons here were much larger then the ones from his old base of operations. And certainly much larger then the 6'4 Hylian warrior. Still, it was done. Josh had to ponder a moment if he was supposed to kill them, after he'd watched the other one run at the urging of the Goron... He didn't know what had overcome him, really. Josh was a generally more pacifistic fighter, going for slashes to the side, disabling shots, but generally not killing blows. But as he saw the Lizalfos charge him, he couldn't help but go lethal to protect himself and the Goron next to him. It had all happened so fast... And a frown would cross his lips. He'd killed monsters plenty before, but generally not often, and not as brutally as he'd just done. He looked down at the body of the larger Lizalfos, without it's head, his vision moving to the trail of blood that ended at the severed head. A scowl would protrude from his brow as he cursed himself for it. He supposed these monsters were just as much dwellers of this mine as the Gorons were, no? Even if they were savages... But all he could remember was the monster stomping on Maude's leg. And slaughtering all those people... That sight seemed to flash through his eyes at every turn. Shaking his head, he would then look toward the Goron without a word, motioning for him to lead the way when he was ready to do so. His face was hard to read. Was he disgusted with himself? Or simply disgusted by the blood? Either way, he didn't look happy. OOC: Tags: @solveig |
